"Start me up, Charlie, for the love of Christ, start me up..." Like we said, duh. 9) "Standing On Top of the World," by Van Hlalen This archetypal slice of Haggar- era 'Halen accompanied any number of early-' 90s Sport Illustrated "The Year In..." videos. The Dallas Cowboys were on top of the world. The Chicago Bulls, led by the brilliant trifecta of John Paxon, Craig lodges and Bill Wennington, were on top of the world. Brian Boitano was on top of the world, and you will be, too, if you're lucky enough to wake up to Sammy's vocal fire- works and Eddie's power chords. 8) "The Power of Love," by Huey Le%%is and the News At precisely 10:04 a.m., your alarm will come to life with the wholly aver- age rock 'n' roll sound of Huey Lewis and the News. This 1985 hit will send 1.21 gigowatts of vaguely blues, synth-laden electricity pumping through your veins, thereby sending you out of bed and into the bathroom! And you don't even need to steal any plutonium from the Libyan terrorists. 7) "Tiny Dancer," by Elton John You've seen the movie, so you know how this works. During the soft piano intro, you're pissed at your alarm clock for waking you up. As the melodic verse drifts into your ear, you remember the good times you and your alarm have shared. Softly, slowly, it wins you over. Midway through the song, you're hugging your pillow as your housemates peek their heads out of their doors and sing ACDC "The walls were shakin' / The earth was quakin' / My mind was achin' / We were makin it -" this one speaks for itself. 5) "Top Gun Anthem (the theme from Top Gun)," by Harold Faltermeyer & Steve Stevens No one does triumphant, evocative themes quite like Faltermeyer and Stevens, and when it comes to getting off the ground in the morning, this song's the best of the best. Just ask the Iceman. 4) "1 Want You Back," by the Jackson Five It probably took a slap upside the head from Joe Jackson to get Tito out of bed, but the bouncy basslines and charmingly fluid guitar of this #1 hit -- not to mention MJ's boyish vocals - should be enough to get you going. 3) "Good Vibrations,"" by the Beach Boys The theremin -- the theremin! --- and Carl Wilson's ethereal vocals mimic the dream-like state of your now-concluded slumber. When the doo-wop inflected chorus rolls around, you're picking up the good vibes - just like Mike Love. And just in case the harmonica-accompanied middle section lulls you back to sleep, the big a cap- pela chord will freak you out -- just like Brian Wilson in a crowded mall. 2) "Good Day Sunshine," by the Beatles During the Revolver sessions, John and George were experimenting with psyche- delics, but Paul stuck with more "tradition- al" intoxicants - you know, the sort that make you "feel good, in a special way." The unreleased version of this song, in fact, gave praise not only to sunshine and shady trees, Courtesy of Capio "Get on up, you got to go to class, get on upl" but also to -Ringo's stash of incredibly huge spleefs." George Martin stepped in and cut out that last bit. 1) "Get Up (I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine," by James Brown This piece of unstoppable, undeniable and downright unadulterated funk is more reason to get out of bed than realizing you overslept for your Stats final. The sweetly syncopated guitar will take you not to the bridge, but to the shower, and JB's relentless encouragement will have you movin', doin' it, you know? Bottom line: After waking up to this songs you will Get Up and (Feel Like Being The) hardest working student in school-business.
