12 - The Michigan Daily - Tuesday, December 5, 2000 CAMMALLERI Continued from Page 12 and you become sort of a national hero," Cammalleri said. "To win a gold for your country-eit's a great honor and I'm so excited for the opportunity." But, there are always negatives with every positive - the Wolverines will most likely be without three of their top players, including their two lead- ing scorers (Hilbert and Cammalleri) when the Great Lakes Invitational takes place Dec. 29-30. The loss of Komisarek will hit an already-depleted Michigan blueline even harder, as the Wolverines contin- ue to deal with the injuries to Dave 'Huntzicker, Brad Fraser, and Andy Burnes. A shorthanded group of Wolverines will most likely have to deal with either No. I Michigan State or No. 3 Boston College, after facing Michigan Tech in the opening round. But Powers said that the coaches were fully expecting to compete with- out a few players - much like they have done in recent seasons - and are aware that this is something their play- ers can't pass up. "I think it's incredibly special," Powers said. "To go over and represent the flag, every kid, it just touches them. This is a once-in-a lifetime thing " Redskins, 7-6, axe coach with 3 games remaining ASHBURN, Va. (AP) - After the most ,expensive team in NFL history was booed off the field, Norv Turner must have seen it coming. The Washington Redskins coach found out for sure hours later. He was fired yesterday for failing to live up to expectations with a team once considered a Super Bowl favorite. Owner Dan Snyder made the move after watching his $100 million roster lose Sunday to the New York Giants, 9-7. It was the fourth loss in five games for the Redskins (7-6) and the third straight at home, and it moved them close to elimina- tion from the playoff race. "It's all about winning," Snyder said. "We assembled the best team we could put together. At this point we just really need- ed to make a change, driven with what I call some serious leadership." Turner, in his seventh season with the team, leaves with a 49-59-1 record and one trip to the playoffs. He fought back tears as he said good- bye. "I've obviously been put in a good posi- tion to have an opportunity to win," Turner said. "This team has a chance to be 10-6.- That's a disappointment to me. There's part of me that would like to be a part of it. There's part of me that understands why it's necessary to make a change right now." Passing game coordinator Terry Robiskie was named interim coach. In his first meeting with the team, he made an impassioned speech and received a stand- ing ovation. "Terry is blunt and to the point," defen- sive end Kenard Lang said. "He's like a stick of dynamite. He's going to make something happen." It was stark contrast to Turner, an Xs and Os strategist who never came across as an effective communicator or motiva- tor. "Norv did not threaten players," guard Keith Sims said. "Some guys took advan- tage of him. Terry - you're not going to take advantage of him." Snyder said defensive coordinator Ray Rhodes, the former head coach at Philadelphia and Green Bay was not inter- ested in the job. Gymnasts si all- around standout The Michigan men's gymnastics team recently inked all-around gym- nast Geoff Corrigan. Corrigan, one of the nation's top high school junior gymnists, will join the Wolverines for the 2002 season. Under the watchful eye of coach Ron Brandt, Corrigan has turned in top 20 finishes in both the U.S. National- Championships and the 2000 Junior National Championship. -StaiffrEp/orts SPORTS BRIEFS Donnan booted by Georgia after 7-4 year ATHENS, Ga. (AP) -Georgia fired football coach Jim Donnan yesterday after a disappointing 7-4 season that started with the Bulldogs ranked No. 10 and picked to win the SEC East, his players said. "I thought he would be around anoth- er year," said quarterback Cory Phillips, who was at a team meeting at which Donnan told the team he'had been dis- missed. "I'm a little bit shocked. It's an unsettling feeling." Athletics director Vince Dooley had given Donnan a vote of confidence just last month. But the players said Dooley told them that school president Michael Adams made the decision to fire Donnan. Being John Mackovic: Arizona hires coach TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - After three years as a TV footbail analyst, John Mackovic decided he wasn't through with coaching after all. When Arizona called about the opening created by the resignation of his good friend Dick Tomev, Mackovic jumped at it. Yesterday, Mackovic appeared at a news conference to be introduced a: the Wildcats' new coach, the fourth program he has headed in what will be his 14th season as a major college coach. "The TV gig was nice, but it's not coaching," he said. "It.doesn't have the same feel of coaching."
