0 . NATION/WORLD The Michigan Daily - Friday, December 1, 2000 --7 Space shuttle Endeavour takes astronauts to Alpha Capitol Christmas ' 'f.,,;1 Q 9 - ("APE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) - o ,e shuttle Endeavour blasted off Wt night carrying five astronauts and giant solar wings for the international space station. The shuttle rose promptly from itsseaside pad at 10:06 p.m. in a brilliant blaze of light that turned night into day for miles around. It resembled a bright star as it soared "through a clear sky into orbit. "This is a beautiful night to fly," launch director Mike Leinbach told e astronauts just before liftoff. owe wish you luck. Have fun and give our best to Shep, Sergei 'and Yuri," the space station's three residents. The space station, Alpha, was 230 'niles above the Indian Ocean at liftoff, its. residents supposedly asleep. -ndfeavour will catch up with the sta- tfon tomorrow. Gov. Jeb Bush, who witnessed his st space shuttle flight, couldn't .Jelp but mention the state's election turmoil while congratulating launch controllers. "I don't know if you've noticed. You all have been very busy. But there's a lot of attention on Florida over the last couple of weeks," Bush said, drawing a big laugh. "But I want to tell you that the best of Florida is right here, not what is being depicted on television, but what just happened right now." Endeavour's cargo bay is filled with the world's largest, most powerful set of spacecraft solar wings. The shuttle astronauts will attach the S600 million wings to the space station on Sunday in NASA's most complicated construc- tion mission to date. Once unfurled, the wings will stretch 240 feet from tip to tip, and 38 feet across, constituting the largest structure ever deployed in space. It is one of the heaviest shut- tle payloads ever, 35.000 pounds of panels and associated batteries and radiators. The electricity-producing solar wings will provide the power necessary to open up the entire station and to run the U.S.-made laboratory section when it arrives in January. Alpha's three occu- pants have been confined to two of the station's three rooms because of insuffi- cient power for heating. The shuttle flight almost got off to a late start. NASA delayed fueling Endeav- our by two hours so technicians could remove a bracket that was dangling from the launch pad. Shuttle managers feared the metal bracket could break off and strike Endeavour's wing at liftoff. The bracket was seen dangling during a routine inspection. It's supposed to hold up a water pipe on the outside of the walkway room used by astronauts to board the shuttle. Another loose bracket near- by was replaced. Then a small grass fire broke out near the pad, but quickly was extinguished. .t 4 AP PHOTO State employees wrestle the official Pennsylvania state Christmas tree, a 23-foot Concolor fir from Indiana County, into the rotunda at the state Capitol in Harrisburg, Pa. ELECTION Continued from Page 1 view all the way from Palm Beach to Talla- hassee. Sauls could need the ballots if he sides with Gore after a hearing tomorrow on the merits of recounts in three counties. The vice presi- dent is trying to overturn the official results of orida's election, which give Bush a 537- votQ lead and the 25 electoral votes needed to claim the White House. Gore's advisers believe he needs a court victory and a speedy reduction of Bush's lead to keep public patience with a 23-day sandoff that the vice president said could linger until the Electoral College meets Dec. 18. His lawyers filed an urgent plea with the Zf rida Supreme Court asking the seven jus- ces, all with Democratic ties, to start hand- counting ballots while Sauls decides whether the recounts could be added to Gore's totals. "There is no reason to delay counting ballots even one day," the brief read. Summing up Gore's urgency, both legally and politically, his lawyers told the court: "We're getting close to the end." A new potential for delay emerged late yes- terday when Republicans asked Sauls to order an additional 1.2 million ballots brought to Tallahassee from Volusia, Broward and Pinel- las counties. The judge has not yet considered the request. "We believe there were a number of illegal votes for Gore in those counties.' said Bush spokesman Scott McClellan. The vice president's allies were just as emphatic about a Florida legislative commit- tee's recommendation that a special session be called to choose a slate of electors, pre- sumably Bush supporters. "What the hell is going on here?" Senate Democratic leader Tom Rossin asked in frus- tration. Gore's running mate, Joseph Lieberman, accused Jeb Bush of helping1 a power grab. his brother with "It threatens to put us into a constitutional crisis," Lieberman said. Until now, only Bush's team had talked of stakes so high in an effort to force Gore to concede. Democrats employed the heated rhetoric yesterday to portray Bush as a political puppeteer pulling every available string to maintain his minus- cule lead. Bush brushed off questions about the L OU- islature. saving. "I Won three counts and I think it's time" to end the election. Jesse Jackson, members of the NAACP and the Congressional Black Caucus planned to meet with Attorney General Janet Reno today to request a Justice Department investigation into what Jackson called "corrupt practices" in Florida that helped deny votes to minority people in Florida. "More than recounting, we need an investi- gation," Jackson said in a telephone interview. COURT Continued from Page 1 reached after including a hand count from Broward County -- showed Bush's lead had shrunk to only 537 votes. Rothstein said the Bush legal team is hoping the court will void the Nov. 26 certification. "It would be rood for Bush if the court said the November 14 date was the proper one for certification because Bush had a much bigger lead then," Rothstein said. The events unfolding inside the Supreme Court yesterday and today are rivaled by those taking place just outside its walls. Satellite television trucks cluttered the streets surrounding the court and spectators, eager to xw itness American history in the making, lined up as early as 4 a.m. yesterday to get one of 50 spots inside the courtroom open to the general public. "It's a story to tell," said Rob Hutchings, a stu- dent from Beloit College in Wisconsin who camped out all night to get a seat. He was the second person in line. "It will be something to "It will be something to__ tell our kids 20 years 3 from nowe ' - Rob Hutchings Beloit College student tell our kids 20 years from now, Ilutchings said. At around 5 p.m. vesterday, Hutchinss was joined by about 80 other optimistic spectators who xvere willing to brave the 30-degree temper- atures and sleep outside all night. Many broUght sleeping bags, some even brought tents. "Trivial Pursuit, playing cards and football were some of' the activities keeping them busy. Officials at the Supreme Court said yesterday that at most they would be able to accommodate 50 spectators in the public gallery. There will be, an additional 30 spots for the general public that, will be rotated every three to five minutes. fo.
