The Michigan Daily - Wednesday, November 29, 2000 - 7 LOCAL/STATE stu dents warned of MANDELA Continued from Page 1 liberation struggle.", Cogburn said despite an ethical controversy surrounding Mandela's behavior in South Africa in recent years, she still has a strong follow- ing throughout the world and her visit to the University was a testa- ment to her popularity. Mandela's visit was sponsored in part by CAAS and Students of Color on Campus. Elizabeth James, information and resource coordinator for CAAS, has worked with Students of Color on Campus to organize events this week to benefit the children of South Africa. "Donations and proceeds from all of this week's programs were going to be presented to Mrs. Mandela," James said. "Now we'll have to ship the donations over." Students of Color on Campus have been collecting donations this week on the Diag as part of AIDS r>W Awareness Week. James said Mandela's cancella- tion was disappointing but under- standable. "We were so hopeful, but these r things happen and now we're just thinking of how we can help the situation in South Africa," James said. "Sending our donations to the children of South Africa is a good start," he said. Ross said he plans to work with his students to schedule another program for next spring. "We can't make up for it, but we will try to find a way to recreate their excitement," Ross said.
