PURDUE PASSING DEFENSE: Interesting. We probably haven't seen the best sophomore receiver David Terrell can do -and today would be just the right time. But the Boilermakers' stiffest test probably came from Jarious Jackson and Notre Dame. If Drew Brees and the Wolverines' backs hold each other in check, this matchup could decide the game. The Boilermakers' sec- ondary will also have to deal with Marquise Walker Marcus Knight, and DiAllo Johnson. The only question will be which quarterback is throwing them the ball. Advantage: MICHIGAN PURDUE PASSING OFFENSE VS. MICHIGAN PASSING DEFENSE Facing an offense like this could bring a certain intangible quality back to Michigan's secondary. Doesn't matter what you call it - confidence, cocki- ness, swagger - it's a crucial quality in a secondary. And while Michigan's defenders (including backup corner Terrell) haven't doubted their abilities too much, there's just something about saying you picked off Drew Brees that's not there when you say you intercepted Troy Nunes. That said, there's also something about trying to cover Vinny Sutherland when only he and Brees know what route he's going to run. Well, there's just something about trying to cover Vinny Sutherland. Chris Daniels might be even harder to cover. This season, he has switched with Sutherland. Daniels now runs most of his routes to the inside, while Sutherland runs outside patterns. A particularly frustrating play has Daniels run a quick slant off a three-step drop - nearly impossible to stop. Berka (Purdue): "My defer at the end. I was disappointed i supposed to, we wouldn't have could have expected him to, but DANA UNNANE/Daily Marcus Knight could get a chance to shine against a questionable Purdue secondary. The last offense Michigan faced like this was in the 1998 Rose Bowl against Washington State. Purdue coach Joe Tiller is a former assistant to Mike Price. Advantage: PURDUE SPECIAL TEAMS: While Jeff Del Verne is one of the top kickers in the nation (10-for 12 field goals, 10-for-10 on extra points), his steady performance says as much about his ability as it does about his offense' inability to finish drives with touch- downs. Marcus Knight catches punts for Michigan. Vinny Sutherland returns them for Purdue. With three quarter- backs like the ones in this game, field position might not be crucial. Two of Michigan's touchdowns last week came on drives of 90 and 91 yards' Brees threw a 99-yard completion to Sutherland last week. While that 99-yarder decided the game for Purdue, it's more likely this week that a big punt return could help decide this one. Since Michigan aver- ages 7.5 yards per return (if you don't count Brandon Williams return of a blocked punt) this one's not too hard. Advantage: PURDUE This is one of those games bettors stay away from. It could be a blowout - for either side. Or it could be a classic, one of those rare games that can define a team's season. Make no mistake a Purdue win could be a milestone for the program. But history will wait. MICHIGAN 31, PURDUE 23 w' A\
