H and memories le thicker on Tiger Stadim than layers of
chipingblue paint. Monday night, Detroit said1 goodbye to the
spot where Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Al Kaline, Alan
? Trammell and Robert Fick (yes, Robert Fick) and countless others went
about the profession of baseball. The 88-year old park will forever be
* remembered as a hitter's park, and not just because of Fick's towering
seventh-inning grand slam that almost went over the right field roof,
and stands as the park's final homer.
*4 The memories of Tiger Stadium are the images that stick in our
minds. The way the worn away-asp>halt on Trumbull Avenue reveals the
bricks beneath. The way the turnstile clicks when you enter and the
smell of onions and peppers on the grill.
Tiger Stadium still stands, at the corner of Michigan and Trumbull,
awaiting an uncertain fate. But no matter what is done, Tiger Stadium
- and baseball in Detroit- will never be the same.-
