me mivcngan vasty - weanesaay, geptemoer in 1 - r ndonesian ~oliers loot U.N. mission *DILI, Indonesia (AP) -- Indonesian soldiers looted the abandoned U.N. mission in East Timor yesterday, just hours after 110 U.N. personnel and 1,300 East Timorese were evacuated and flown to safety to end a 10-day siege. Office equipment and computers were carted away and vehicles were trashed by the soldiers - "the very people we asked to secure the compound when U.N. staff moved to the Australian consulate," U.N. spokesperson Fred Eckhard said in New York. There were reports yesterday that the compound was also torched, but Eckhard said he was told that it was not a compound but a small house nearby that had been urned. The remaining U.N. staff members, holed up in the Australian consulate, reported that a black plume of smoke was rising from the direction of the compound in the provincial capital of Dili, said Fernando del Mundo, spokesperson for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees in Jakarta. DEAL Continued from Page 1 ing remains a major roadblock. Griffiths said administrators are trying to spread costs across the University. An ITD direc- tor, William Aikman, said the program will most likely be funded by a mixture of University funds and revenues from future Microsoft product sales on campus. ITD can expect a return on its investment in as early as one year, Aikman said, noting that his estimate was purely specu- lative. In a ballpark projection, he put the total savings to the University over the next three years in the millions of dollars. The Microsoft contract is a Custom Enterprise Agreement, an initiative Microsoft extended from corporate America to educational institutions in a landmark deal with Indiana University last year. Rumors of a contract have circulated the campus for weeks and drawn a mixed reaction from software customers. In light of the pending antitrust suit against Microsoft, in which the company is accused of creating an unlawful monop- oly, some customers had reservations about the company using a foothold at the University to drive out competitors. Larry Debord, an Ann Arbor resident, said the University should not serve as "a tool in Microsoft's profit-making machine" Business graduate student Nancy Sotomayor abruptly cor- rected him: "Their monopolization machine." Other customers embraced the deal for the substantial sav- ings it promises. "I'm a student. I'm poor. I don't have $200,' said Medical fourth-year student John Austin. "Ideally, I don't think the University should do this. But as a student, if I can get it for $40, I have no problems at all." Continued from Page 1 But despite Ernestine Bradley's love of teachingshe has taken a leave of absence to help campaign for her husband. Although cancer care and research is not an issue on Bill Bradley's presiden- tial platform, part of the Ann Arbor tour yesterday included a visit to the University's Comprehensive Cancer Center. Visiting the center was of particular interest to Ernestine Bradley who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992. After fighting and successfully over- coming the disease, Ernestine and Bill Bradley have been active and outspo- ken supporters of cancer research and cancer organizations. Talking openly about cancer has somewhat taken the "taboo" away, she said. "Bill has been an incredible support- er," said Ernestine Bradley of her hus- band attentiveness during the time when she was ill. Ernestine Bradley said she the University's cancer center shows encouraging improvements in cancer care. Ernestine Bradley has also published several books; her latest being The Language of Silence: West German Literature and the Holocaust. She said" during an interview that her book explores the works of writers from the post-World War II period. "I want to know who they are in the present by analyzing how they look back at the Nazi Regime," she said. There is a discussion of her book today at the Ann Arbor Jewish Community Center at 11:30 a.m. But her visit to the University, Ernestine Bradley said, is mainly to organize for Bradley's campaign and "energize the students here." When asked in a private interview yesterday why Bill Bradley is a better candidate than Vice President Al Gore, who is also running for the Democratic presidential nomination, she said, "Bill is a better candidate because he has more life experience." He has had more than just government experience which includes being a writer, speaker and former NBA basketball player, she said. The fact that Bill Bradley "played on a multi-racial team" and "traveled all over the country," has brought him in contact with more people on a more intimate basis, Ernestine Bt-adlev said. She added that the process of travel- ing - which Bill Bradlev has been doing for the past 30 years - has enabled him to "put together a narrative of who we are as a countrv." By compiling this information Bill Bradley has come to the conclusion that "we are all Americans" and that he wants "to appeal to the commonality of all of us, Ernestine Bradley said. After meeting with the College Democrats, which was open to the pub- lic, students were invited to sign on to the campaign to elect Bill Bradley. Members of the College Democrats were pleased with the turnout. In previ- ous years, "students have been over- whelmingly supportive" in Democratic politics, said College Democrats President Josh Cowen , an LSA senior. Law first-year student David Sikes said that he came to hear and learn more about the Bradley campaign and found the question-answer period infor- mative.
