Danny Kissane has some thoughts on
the Michigan-Rice football game. No,
Kissane isn't a football expert, analyst
or anything of the sort. He isn't even a
football fan. He's the executive steward
at Smith and Wolensky's, a world-
famous, New York-based steakhouse.
And he knows that rice and beef don't
mix.
"Rice is not an item that you can do
too many things with," Kissane said.
"We don't do too many rice dishes."
If Rice is the rice, where's the beef?
That would be Michigan's offensive
line, a 1,472-pound force featuring four
returning starters (seepage 12).
Although rice is a grain, its football
team resembles baked goods. It's the
one non-conference game on
Michigan's schedule that could be con-
sidered a cupcake, sandwiched between
nationally-ranked powerhouses Notre
Dame and Syracuse.
The frosting on the cupcake?
Returning quarterback Chad
Richardson, who took over that starting

"I feel real good about our quarter-
back situation," Rice coach Ken
Hattfield said. "Chad Richardson is
definitely our No. I quarterback, his
backup played a little bit last year, too,
and if Jeremy Bates is completely
healed, we'll have three quarterbacks
who are experienced and have won
games for us."
Richardson is an option quarterback,
and the option gave Michigan fits last
year against Notre Dame and Syracuse.
But it probably won't be too much of an
advantage. The Wolverines learned a lot
about the option last year in those two
losses, particularly how to simulate it in
practice to prepare for the upcoming
game. And, since the Wolverines first
three games are all against option
teams, they'll spend far more than one
week preparing for it.
And other than Richardson, the Owls
are more than a few hoots short of a
filet mignon. Almost half of last year's
starters graduated, leaving just a shell of
the team that couldn't even finish .500.
So while Hattfield says his team is

Kevin Rogers has been a thorn in
Lloyd Carr's side for a while now.
Rogers, Syracuse's offensive coordi-
nator last season, devised the option
offense that embarassed Michigan in its
home opener last season, 38-28, and
dropped the Wolverines to 0-2 for the
first time in 10 years.
Then, during the offseason, Rogers
left to occupy the same position at Notre
Dame. His schemes gave Carr and the
Michigan defense so many sleepless
nights that, after the Wolverines sur-
vived the Irish's option in this year's sea-
son opener, Carr was glad to bid
farewell to his nemesis.
"I'm sick and tired of him," Carr
joked about Rogers after the game. "Get
him the hell out of here."
Of course, Rogers wasn't the only
person that made the Syracuse option
attack so deadly.
Remember Donovan McNabb? The
Michigan defense hardly does, since
they never got a good look at him all
game last year. To refresh their memory,
he was the orange and white blur that set
up camp in the end zone at Michigan
Stadium.
Well, like Rogers, McNabb has gone
on to greener pastures. He plays with the
Philadelphia Eagles in the NFL, and
Carr and the Michigan defense are just
as glad to see him go. Well, all of them
except Michigan linebacker Ian Gold.
You see, Gold missed the Syracuse
game with an injury last season. Which
means he also missed the chance to
chase McNabb around for 60 minutes.
"I'm really disappointed that he's not
playing this year," Gold said. "I would
have loved that challenge. I was bitter
that I didn't get the opportunity to play
against someone with that much talent.

Syracuse freshman Troy Nunes will do his best to captain the Orangemen's option
attack, but he still has some big shoes to fill.
"But this year, I'm sure they'll have
another good option quarterback in
there trying to replace him."
Whoever that is, he'll have to try pret-
ty hard. Now that McNabb is gone,
Syracuse coach Paul Pasqualoni has the
unenviable task of choosing from two
quarterback prospects with limited
game experience.
Sophomore Madei Williams, who
saw time against Michigan last year
after McNabb had been removed from
the game, battled with redshirt freshman
Troy Nunes for the spot through spring
and fall practices.
Pasqualoni took a familiar approach
to the controversy, refusing to reveal the
starter until ESPN did the same during
the season opener against Toledo. And
even after Nunes got the starting nod
and appeared to stake his claim to the
position, completing nine-of-13 passes
for 118 yards and a touchdown,
Pasqualoni refused to name either as the
starter for the following game. Williams
played sparingly due to a hand injury
suffered two weeks ago.
While there may be some uncertainty
as to who will call the signals for the
Orange, whoever wins the job will have
