The Dow sagged Tuesday as Coca-Cola CEO Douglas Ivester announced he would step down from his position after 2 and a half years as the head of the world's most famous soft drink company. But, Yahoo! soared 67 3/16 on Tuesday as it entered the S&P 500. Mutual fund managers led the internet leader's short term boost as many funds try to mimic the S&P by holding the same stocks. A rally was sparked Friday due to a good economic report that showed investors that inflation is in check. Average hourly earnings, which make up 2/3 of a products price, grew by only 0.1 percent against analysts prediction of 0.3 percent. The Dow came 40 points shy of its Aug. 25 record. What is the Dow Jones Industrial Average? The DJIA represents 30 stocks traded on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and NASDAQ, and are all major factors in their respective industries. These tocks are widely held by individuals and institutional investors. Many financial advisers think of it as a good indicator in telling whether the NYSE is doing well or poorly. What is the NASDAQ Composite? The NASDAQ is the fastest growing stock market in the United States due to it being a screen-based stock market, compared to a trading floor market like the NYSE. It also has almost all of the technological stocks available for trading, which has proved to be a very volatile industry in the last couple of years. What is the S&P 500? The S&P 500 is amarket value weighted index composed of 400 industri- al stocks, 20 transportation, 40 financial, and 40 utility. It is a far broader measure than the DJIA ecause it takes into account 500 different stocks traded on the two main exchanges (NYSE and ASDAQ-AMEX) compared to the DJIA's 30 traded on the NYSE and NASDAQ. --Compiled by Daily StaffReporter Kevin Magnuson from wire reports. OUTLAY Continued from Page IA University, were allocated funds from the budget, said state Sen. Alma Wheeler Smith (D-Salem Twp.). In an attempt to provide funds for seven other higher education institu- tions in the state, Schwarz introduced the amendment to the Senate appro- priations committee which was approved Tuesday. The amendment provides $100 as a holding place for each university that was not provided capital outlay funds in the House bill. The holding place, while not directly allocating funds to the universities, gives them the opportunity to develop architectural plans that would be sub- mitted for review. After submitting the completed plans the universities and colleges will be provided with the cap- ital outlay funds. The amended bill will have to return to the House for approval. It is likely that the bill will end up back in committee, University Vice President for Government Relations Cynthia Wilbanks said. "I would not call this by any means a finished product," Wilbanks said. The amended bill will have to revis- it the state House for approval before it can be sent to Michigan Gov. John Engler for his signature. "It's very up in the air as to how the administration is going to react," Wilbanks said. "The Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Association at the University have stood in opposition of hazing for many years. "Both organizations have formal policies banning hazing in their member fraternities and sororities, and will work closely with all involved in this case should it be determined that these policies have been violated," the statement said. IFC President Rohith Reddy said the incident is not indcati e of activities in the Greek system. "I'm in shock and disbelief that this actually happened.? Reddv said. The last time a hazing incident resulted in serious penalties for a campus fraternity was in 1994, when a Sigma Phi Epsilon pledge was admitted to the hospital for alcohol poisoning. The Sig Eps chapter voluntarily, left campus and returned in 1997- with new members. The Office of Student Conflict Resolution, which oversees the Code of Student Conduct, and the Ann Arbor Police Department are conducting their own inquiries into the incident, University spokesper- son Julie Peterson said. a. a 4 '4 Fun. professional atmosphere.
