LOCAL/STATE ~HOUT i't out!, Organization awards Wolta with pedagogial accolade The Michigan Daily -- Friday, December 3, 1999- i III PPLE ontlnued from Page 1 rutstanding educator. ~A junior Amanda Warner, co- hii.of SHOUT, said Nolta was ciecled from a group of more than 50 nominated professors. "TOur committee decided who ould receive the award based on at only the quantity of votes, but e quality of the nominations,' Varner said. To notninate a teacher, Warner dded, students had to write why they felt their professor was most deserving of the Golden Apple. "Some wrote only a paragraph and others wrote pages about their profes- sor. (Nolta) won not only because she received so many nominations but because the substance of her nomina- tions was so profound,' she said. Prior to yesterday morning, Nolta said she knew little about the Golden Apple Award. "Three weeks ago, someone said something to me about the Golden Apple and I said 'What's that?"' Upon realizing that her students had nominated her for the Golden Apple, Nolta said she was humbled. "I can't even comprehend how flat- tering this is. It's a phenomenon to me. I owe the students a lot,' she said. The Golden Apple, which SHOUT awards in conjunction with Hillel and Apple Computers, was inspiredbyan ancient Jewish teacher whose philosophy was to armange one's life before it ends. As winner of the annual award that honors "teachers who consis- tently teach each lecture as if it were their last," according to the Golden Apple's Website. Nolta will have the opportunity to give her "ideal last lecture" in Rackham Auditorium in January. One of Nolta's studcnts, Engineering first-year student Kevin Lynn, said his professor definitely deserved te award. "Our class is so early but ... she is always so cheerful and enthusiastic. She makes it easy to learn," Lynn said. Nolta said she would not let receivin' the award affect her teachs- ing methods. "If I think for one sec- ond I'm teaching for awards, I'll have lost my focus."
