CCHA sends seven
to national level

When Michigan's Andy Hilbert and
Jeff Jillson make their way to
Skellefta and Umea, Sweden later this
month to join the 22-member United
States National Junior Team they
won't be the lone CCHA representa-
tives.
Sending a total of seven players to
the 2000 International Ice Hockey
Federation World Junior
Championship, the CCHA will be
well represented as Michigan State's
John-Michael Liles and Adam Hall
along with Notre Dame forwards
Brett Henning, David Inman and
Connor Dunlop also join the U.S.
team.
For Hall and Jillson, the tournament
trip will mark their second straight, as
the two played last season in the 1999
championship in Winnipeg.
Hall currently leads the CCHA with
four game-winning goals and is tied
for first with 12 goals overall.
The sophomore was a second-
round selection of the Nashville

Predators in the 1999 NHL Entry
Draft.
Meanwhile, Liles is fast becoming
a force to be reckoned with among the
league's young defenseman.
With four goals and seven assists,
he's currently tied for first among
rookie defenseman in scoring.
Inmann, a second-round selection
of the New York Rangers, is currently
leading Notre Dame with seven goals
on the year.
Inmann joins Henning, a ninth-
round selection of the New York
Islanders, and Dunlop who's Notre
Dame's top scoring freshman.
The CCHA contingent will join 15
other collegians in West Point, New
York Dec. 13 before they head to
Sweden where they'll play games on
Dec. 20 and Dec. 22.
The U.S. will open play against the
Czech Republic on Dec. 26 while the
Canadians are slated to face Finland
on Christmas.

in GLI tourney

Comrie said.'It's great competition, and there is a lot of
pride that comes with each game because you are play-
ing for your country."
But while Jillson, Hilbert and perhaps Comrie will
battle for their respective countries, the rest of the
Wolverines will compete in another tournament, the
Great Lakes Invitational.
Michigan struggled the last two years in the tourna-
ment, but prior to the slide, the Wolverines had won nine.
straight titles.
The loss of top performers for the tournament could
hinder Michigan's chances, but it's not something that
the Wolverines haven't dealt with before. Powers and the
rest of the coaches look at it as an opportunity for the
other players to make an impact.
"In the past it hasn't been a problem with the others
stepping up," Powers said. "On defense this year, losing
one of the top four will hurt us a little bit. But with
Magnuson. Gassoff and Fraser getting some playing time
recently, that experience will hopefully carry over to the
GLI.
And with recent line changes and losses to injury, the
players have become used to filling in for each other. 0
"You always want to be able to play with your team,
but this kind of situation is tough to turn down," Comrie
said. "I think our team will be fine. They'll have to step
it up. It's a challenge that they will have, but they'll do
fine.
The announcement not only results in a big step for.
the players but also for the growth of the program.
Powers said that seeing a program consistently place
players at the national level shows the prestige of the
program to potential recruits.
Powers also said that this national prestige will help
the future of these three players along with the futures of
the rest of the team.
"This is justeanother year where we have three excep-
tional players that are moving on for a few games,"
Powers said. "That is part of what we're here for - to
give these kids the best competition so they can move on
when they're done here."

2000 U.S. Junior National Team CCHA players
Only three CCHA teams have players that will represent the conference on
the 2000 U.S. Junior National Team. Michigan's Mike Comrie also qualified
for the Canadian National Team. Here are the seven CCHA players from the
CCHA who will play for the U.S.
