LOCAL/STATE The Michigan Daily - Thursday, December 2, 1999 - 7A Dow Jones Industrial Average, NASDAQ and S&P 500 Composite for Week 11125-121 DJIA Close Change NASDAQ Close Change S&P Close Change 1/25 NO TRADING DUE TO THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY 11/26 10,988.91 -19,26 3,447.81 +27.31 1,416.62 -0.46 11/29 10,947.22 -40.99 3,422.37 -25.44 1,407.83 -25.44 11/30 10,877.82 -70.10 3,336.16 -85.21 1,389.07 -18.76 12/1 10,998.39 +120.58 3,353.71 +17.55 1,397.72 +8.65 Dighlights from the week: Yesterday, the blue chip stocks enjoyed a great day, reflected in the Dow's substantial gain. Investors took their profits from the tech sector and put it into stocks like McDonald's, which bought Boston Chicken for $173 million. Exxon-Mobil also saw a good trading day - their first as a combined oil company. The recently hot NASDAQ is up 12.5 percent for the month while the Dow is only up 1.4 percent. However, profit taking from the NASDAQ market began Tuesday (a 70 point loss) as their run of 16 record closes in the last four weeks came to an end. This should eventually effect the heavily tech laden S&P. The leading internet information site, Yahoo!, will become part of the S&P 500 index after the Dec. 7 trading day. What is the Dow Jones Industrial Average? The DJIA represents 30 stocks traded on the New York' *tock Exchange (NYSE) and NASDAQ are all major factors in their respective industries. These stocks are widely held by individuals and institutional investors. Many financial advisers think of it as a good indicator in telling whether the NYSE is doing well or poorly. What is the NASDAQ Composite? The NASDAQ is the fastest growing stock market in the U.S. due to it being a screen-based stock market, compared to a trading floor market like the NYSE. It also has almost all of the technological stocks available for trading, which has proved to be a very volatile industry in the last couple of years. What is the S&P 500? The S&P 500 is a market value weighted index composed of 400 industrial stocks, 20 transportation, 40 financial, and 40 utility. It is a far broader measure than the DJIA ecause it takes into account 500 different stocks traded on the two main exchanges (NYSE and ASDAQ-AMEX) compared to the DJA's 30 traded on the NYSE and NASDAQ. - Compiled by Daily Staff Reporter Kevin Magnusonfmom wire reports. "We're trying to take advantage of the new technolo- gy and we're also trying to save trees" Alice Kelly, Rachel's mother, said the policy change may anger some parents "because they feel their kids may not be forthcoming. "Personally, I don't see it as an issue. I never opened my kids' grades anyway;' Alice Kelly said, contrasting her reaction to other parents who rely on having their children's grades mailed home. Associate Registrar Lynn Aidleman noted that when the University mails stu- dents' grades to their permanent address- es, the document goes to students - making the information private to them. "The term grade report is not mailed to parents. It's mailed to students," Aidleman said, adding that if students need to give their parents an official copy of their grades, "we would be happy to mail it to anywhere (students) request."
