Wednesday, December 1, 1999 - The Michigan Daily - 11 ihikan proba ly i Continued from Page 10 will taste 'M' hoopsters struggle in post the champion of the Big East or the ACC. Both of those champions - Virginia Tech and Florida State will play for the national title in the Sugar Bowl, conveniently delayed by the NFL playoffs until Jan. 4. Regardless, Michigan, which hasn't been to the Orange Bowl since it became the first Big Ten team to dare go to a game other than the Rose Bowl in 1976. Expect to see them back sooner than 2022. With the WS' current level of success (save for the occasional squawking from Tulane or Marshall), combined with the level Lloyd Carr seems to have found for his program, an at-large bid could pass this way frequently. In the beat-em- up Big Ten, titles can be won in the weirdest of ways (ask Wisconsin or Northwestern). But a team with an alumni and fan base like Michigan's will always catch the BCS's eye. Money, if you haven't noticed by now, is the plasma of the bowl system. This isn't to say that bowls are corrupt. aey just run on money. And money will keep the confer- es, who support the BCS, happy. - Rick Freeman can be reached via e-mail at rickfree@um ich.edu. By Michael Kern Daily Sports Writer With 13:28 to go in the first half of its 79-66 victory over Providence last night, the Michigan women's basket- ball team found itself in a precarious situation. Both starting post players, Alison Miller and Ruth Kipping, were riding the bench with two fouls. Three and a half minutes later, Michigan was behind 25-14 to a team that won just five games last season. "They sat because we have a rule that if you pick up two fouls in the first half you sit," Michigan coach Sue Guevara said. "For us, that is good because we have people that can come in and pick up the slack." Following a performance in which they combined for just ten shots in two games last week, Miller and Kipping struggled early against the Friars. In the first four minutes, Miller had her shot blocked three times and was forced into two jump balls before drawing two fouls and a seat on the bench for the remainder of the first half. "This whole game was frustrating for me," Miller said. "But after I picked up two fouls, we were lucky enough that we had post players come in off the bench who could play at a high level." Kipping followed an offensive charge on a fast break with a foul inside on defense that also earned her bench time for the final 13 minutes of the first half. "I forgot I got the first (offensive) foul," Kipping said. "I wouldn't have gone for a block if I had remembered." Had it not been for sophomore Raina Goodlow "picking up the slack" and contributing 10 first half points off the bench, the Wolverines may have found themselves with a huge deficit at the half. Even with a late half surge, Michigan was still down three at the break. Fortunately for the Wolverines, Miller and Kipping made the necessary adjustments at halftime. After a one- for-five performance with just three rebounds in the first half, Miller fin- ished the game 5-for-1I from the field, with 10 points and I1 rebounds. She also twice sunk key shots to give Michigan the lead in the second half. "We talked about how (the post play- ers) were being doubled teamed and that they needed to reverse-pivot," Guevara said. "Once they reverse-piv- oted, they could see where their partner was and get the ball to them inside." Williams to coach Citrus Bowl I1 SABAN Continued from Page 10 cord of 34-24-1 in his five years, earned S697,330 per year at Michigan State. His new job will reportedly pay him in excess of SI million dollars a year after radio, TV and internet incentives. In his absence, the Spartans must now regroup and find way to win the season's final game. "A lot of people are going to count us out and say that we're not the same m," sixth-year senior Amp Campbell said. "We've been proving people wrong all year. We've got to show our character right now. We've lost Coach Saban, but we've got to pick up where we left off." Spartan basketball coach Tom Izzo also made an appearance. Izzo voiced his support and reminded the team that it is the players, and not the coaches who win the games. "Remember that the players play the e,"Izzo said. "And the coaches wear Msuit. The basketball team is behind you. You guys have inspired me and my team. We come in as a team and watch you guys every weekend. I haven't missed one home game in 17 years. You better believe my ass is flying down to Orlando to be with you guys for the game." After all was said and done, the play- ers filed out one-by-one - each taking his turn to congratulate Williams on the job with a hand shake and a hug. "I'm really happy for him," Michigan State wide receiver Plaxico Burress said. "He's a really energetic person who likes his job. I'm happy for him and his fami- ly from a personal standpoint because I think he deserves it." No one is exactly sure how this group of Spartans will react without Saban roaming the sidelines when they next take the field. but the players seem to understand his decision. "I wasn't really upset to see him go," Burress said. "It's a good move for him. I mean I was upset, and it's going to be weird not seeing him hollering and screaming on the sideline, but I think Coach Williams will pick up the slack. We're just going to have to work really hard in practice up until the game." I 0 WIDEWORLD SPORTS CENTER ROLLER HOCKEY1 Good Food, jf1 / - Good Drinks, i Good Prices..
