Background checks
halt 160,000 gun sales

WASHINGTON (AP) - More than
160,000 people were prevented from
purchasing firearms durin, the first
year of computerized instant criminal
background checks on would-be gun
buyers, the Justice Department said
yesterday. Nearly three out of four of
them were convicted felons.
Combined with the 312,000 handgun
purchases barred during the manual
system in effect from Feb. 28, 1994,
through Nov. 30, 1998, the Brady Act
has barred a total of more than 470.000
prohibited people from acquiring
firearms, the department said.
State and local authorities did back-
ground.checks during the old system.
Under the National Instant Criminal
Background Check System that began
Dec. 1, 1998, about half the checks are
done by the FBI and the remainder by
states. Since the computerized system

"The system has pro en to be highly
effective. performing more than 8.7
million checks in its first 12 months,"
Attorney Generai Janet Reno said.
"Keeping guns out of the wrong hands
has been crtical to the success of our
strategy for reducng gun violence and

dented 7 I 2-year decline in crime in
this country."
President Clinton said in a statement:
"These ... are not just numbers. They
represent lives saved, injuries avoid,
tragedies averted." And the president
announced that the Treasury
Department on Tuesday began a new
computerized program, called Online
LEAD, to help local police use gun-
tracing data to catch illegal gun traf-
fickers.

said the state should widen its focus on
government licensing.
"We have more urgent issues that we
need to be regulating," Brater said.

is a delicate issue, Brater said.
"You get into some First Amendment
issues pretty quick when you try to reg-

ulate adult businesses," she said.
Komendera said Ddja Vu takes in
about 63 percent of its business after 9
p.m. On weekends, the nightclub is
open as late at 4 a.m.
The Ypsilanti Deja Vu does not
have a liquor license. Komendera said
many late-night customers come from
the two adjacent bars before driving
home.
"They can come over for a few hours
here and sober up," he said.

40) who have used sedative drugs recreationally or
who drink alcohol regularly but with no current or
past drug dependence are needed for study of a
new sedative-like medication.
Participants will be interviewed, fill out question-
naires, and participate in six drug administration
sessions. After each session, participants must be
willing to stay overnight on our residential unit
(total of six nights separated by at least 5 days).
The entire study may take seven or more weeks to
complete, depending on how frequent volunteers
can visit the laboratory for testing.
