Tuesdav. November 2 1999 - 7 ATE ntltud fomPage 1 The issue of the month will coin- cide with other forums of discus- sion. The task force is sponsoring a panel and open discussion on Nov. 15th to debate the first issue, gun control. "'It's going to be Talk Back Live- ish in essence because we want it to be very participatory for the audi- 9ce," Coulouris said. "The panel will do some discussion on its own and then we'll open up the floor in the spirit of dialogue." But the College Republicans view the Voice Your Vote task force dif- ferently. "My personal feeling and the College Republicans feel that Voice Your Vote is about registering liber- al students, not registering all stu- dents," College Republicans' esident Rory Diamond said. .That's why we're kicking off our 1;000 for 2000 campaign." The 1,000 for 2000 campaign will focus on registering 1,000 moderate to conservative students to vote for the.2000 election. They will rely on a primarily grass roots campaign of e-mail, -meetings and activities on the Diag to register students. The program is Oonsored by the College Republicans and already has regis- tered 150 first-year students, Diamond said. Coulouris denied trying to attract solely liberal students to vote and said the task force's main purpose is to inspire more participation in the democratic process. "Only a very narrow minded per- s -n would say that voting is what *unts," Coulouris said. "Voting is e end. It's the last piece of the puzzle. There is so much more that needs to happen in order for some- one to be an active and engaged participant in the democratic process." The president, the Israeli premier, the Palestinian leader and a roster of other world figures - including Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin - gathered in this blustery Nordic capital for a two-day com- memoration of the life of Yitzak Rabin, the peace-minded Israeli prine minister who was assassinated four years ago this week. Clinton warned the swarming global press corps here that "I don't think you should expect some sort of major announced breakthrough" to come out of this week's session. But he was urging the Israeli and Palestinian leaders to settle in for serious talks on such divisive points as Palestinian statehood and the sta- tus of Jerusalem. Oslo is accustomed to hosting world leaders. But Clinton is the first incum- bent U.S. president to visit Norway, and his arrival has prompted unprecedented security precautions. All the local newspapers ran front- page photos yesterday of police on the main street armed with automatic rifles - a shocking image in a tran- quil society where neither police nor anyone else carries a gun in normal circumstances. This week's session is designed to invoke Rabin's memory as a prod to revive the stalled Israeli-Palestinian peace effort in the Middle East. Clinton described the late prime min- ister, who shared the Nobel Peace Prize with Arafat in 1994, as "a man who gave his life for the peace process." In Israel yesterday, the newspaper Haaretz offered a detailed report - evi- dently leaked by Barak's government - on Israel's negotiating position for the next round of peace talks. It said that Israel would be willing to recognize an independent Palestinian state in return for securi- ty guarantees. MORE THAN 40,000 SERVED DAILY. THE MICHIGAN DAILY. Three football players stabbed outside bar By Emily Kulkus and Dave Levinthal Daily Orange SYRACUSE, N.Y. (U-WIRE) - Three Syracuse University football play- ers and two other men were stabbed early Sunday morning after being attacked by several men outside a bar on the city's west side, according to Syracuse police. David Byrd, a starting cornerback for the Orangemen, sustained severeneck and shoulder wounds during a brawl involving between 60 and 75 people outside Sadie's Place police said. The Syracuse senior remained in critical condition at University Hospital, early yesterday morning, hospital officials said, Giovanni DeLoatch, a reserve defen- sive end, sustained cuts to his arm, head and back and Maynard "Duke" Pettijohn, a starting defensive end, sustained cuts to his head and ear, police said. DeLoatch is in good condition at St. Joseph's Hospital, while Pettijohn was treated and released, hospital officials said. Police charged two Syracuse men on multiple felony charges in connection with the fight, with one or two more arrests likely yesterday, Sgt. David Sackett said. Police are still unsure, despite inter- viewing dozens of witnesses and suspects, what caused the melee, which began shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday along the 100 block of Shonnard St., Sackett said.
