A fter two-and-a-half months of hard-hitting, chest-thumping, in- your-face action, the 1999 col- lege football season is grinding to a halt. With many teams having only one or two games remaining in their sea- sons, the games increase in importance. Not because the season's almost over. Not because teams are jockeying for bowl position. No, the reason why this week is so Berka important is because of the rivalries that are played. Unless you are Michigan State and Penn State - who try to invent a rivalrv with each other TEEING because all the OF other schools in the Big Ten look down on them - this weekend is huge for campus pride and morale. This week is Rivalry Week. But what makes a good rivalry? Good games between two highly com- petitive teams? The proximity between the two schools? The personalities of their coaches? There are many factors that make a good rivalry. But which rivalry is the best rivalry? Bored one night, I decided to analyze a group of rivalries that have been on the national forefront for years. I decided to take a walk to clear my head. Of course, I started this little brain- storming session by looking at Michigan's upcoming game this season against the Buckeyes. Michigan-Ohio State has all the makings of a good rivalry, as the two teams truly hate each other with a passion and seem to take great pleasure in screwing the other out of good opportunities. Michigan-Ohio State is also played on grass outside in cold weather. Weather that makes the bones chatter and teeth freeze is always a plus as far as rivalries are concerned. But being a writer of the Michigan Daily, it would be rather gameless to rate a rivalry involving my school as the best, so the Wolverines and Buckeyes lose out. Getting kind of hungry, I went to a greasy spoon and heard the patrons dis- cussing Auburn-Alabama. In a state where there is really nothing to do but watch this game, the intensity borders on the insane. In fact, these schools took a 40-year break from playing each other earlier in the century because of i .S , the sheer hostility that the game caused within the state. But the Tiger-Crimson Tide matchup has some flaws. First, the weather is warm. No real rivalry game should be played in warm weather; I don't care where you are. Secondly, and most per- tinent, the game is in Alabama. So although the game is awesome, you still have to live in Alabama afterward. Some people at the tanning booth were telling me that Florida State- Florida is the best rivalry game, but those people have absorbed too many UV rays. While the Seminoles and Gators have been two of the decade's elite teams, they don't present the national permanence which makes a great rivalry. Besides, Florida State was an all- female school until the late 1940s. While it would make for an entertaining game, I'm pretty positive that the Gators didn't play an all-girls team back in the day. Society wasn't as liberated towards women's sports back then. But anyway, a rivalry which only dates back 50 years is not worthy of the title of best rivalry. If you go to a library, you'll hear peo- ple talking about the Harvard-Yale game in between pages of Plato. These people will use big words - which I won't use because I can't spell them - when discussing how Harvard and Yale is truly 'The Game'. These bookworms do have points. Harvard and Yale have been playing each other since the 1870s. The schools are very close in proximity, status and athletic skill level. But that skill level is nowhere near good. In fact, the word bunk comes to mind when talking about those teams. No game consisting of teams that would November 20, 1999 Around the Horn The best nvalry in all the land? Iowa vs. Mnt o STATE BUCKEYES There are some great rivalries in college football, but one takes the cake - Minnesota versus Iowa. Why? They pl Floyd, a pig.
