VOCAL/STATE The Michigan Daily - Monday, November 15, 1999 -- 7A 4ASA ontinued from Page A classical dances, to Indian-American cu- iure at the beginning of a new millenni- um, shown with an integration of hip-hop into the performances. Shouts and cheers resonated through- out the auditorium, at the beginning of the first dance, "Fire and Ice." "Fire and Ice" was a blend of ancient classical forms of Bharata Natyam, Kuchipudi $d Odissi that originated in South India a few thousand years ago, said Engineering senior Suman Palakodeti, who choreographed the dance. Fifteen other dances represented many aspects of Indian culture from dance rep- resenting the Bhil tribe, to dancing with raas sticks and garba, to qawwali, a musi- cal dialogue. Skits and videos were inter- spersed between the acts. "I think this is a much better represen- tation of who we are than who our par- ents were," said Business graduate stu- dent Ajay Amlani, who performed in the show three years ago. Many alums return to the University to see the performance they were once involved in, and many said they now con- sider it a homecoming activity. "When you're working on the show it's a lot of hard work; coming back you feel a sense of unity, that we can come togeth- er for a production of this caliber," said Rahul Shah who graduated from the University last spring. Not only do many alums travel long distances, many family members or friends of the performers also travel from across the nation such as Atlanta, California or New York. By Lisa Koivu Daily Staff Reporter The Coca-Cola Co. is the leading producer of soft drinks in the world. Now, it is the focus of a national campaign encour- aging Coke to start using recycled plastic in its plastic beverage containers. Members of EnAct, the Environmental Action organization on campus, will be on the Diag today collecting plastic bottles made by the Coca-Cola Company and asking students to sign a petition saying they will boycott Coke. All of the labels on the plastic containers will be replaced with labels that say "Dear Mr. Ivester, Take this bottle back and use it again!" The group will then mail the bottles to Douglas Ivester, Coke's chief exec- utive officer. SNRE junior Jessica Mendelowitz, EnAct co-organizer of today's event, said the group has never participated in the cam- paign before and hope to get many students involved. The national campaign began in 1997. "Our goal is to send 1,000 bottles back to Coke and to get 500 students' signatures,' Mendelowitz said. The Grassroots Recycling Network, a national recycling group that advocates policies and practices to achieve zero waste and to end corporate welfare for waste, initiated the campaign. Mendelowitz said no soft drink company in the United States uses recycled plastic in its bottles, but Coke is the focus of the campaign because it is the industry leader in soft drink sales. GRRN feels that if Coke begins to use recycled plastic, the rest of the industry will be forced to follow. She added that although Coke does not use recycled plastic in the United States, it does in other countries where it manufac- tures its products. Also, Mendelowitz said, Coke uses recycled aluminum and provides grant money to environmental causes. According to Coke's Website, the company has "signi ficant- ly reduced the amount of raw materials needed to produce our packaging." But, GRRN argues that while Coke does have excellent recycling rates for aluminum, its rates for using recy- cled plastic has waned in recent years. A Coke representative could not be reached for comment. At a press conference in 1990, Coke announced its intentions to use recycled plastic beverage containers. "Producing new plastic beverage bottles with a blend of recy- cled plastic is a significant step ahead in plastics recycling," Ivester said in a written statement in December 1990. The company held up this promise from 1991 to 1994, but after 1994 it announced that the cost of using recycled bottles was too high to continue. Coke continues to use 25 percent recycled bottles in other countries, including Sweden and Switzerland. In those coun- tries, the company uses bottles that are refillable. Mendelowitz said that although Coke claims it is environ- mentally friendly, it is using up scarce resources by not using recycled plastic. "Plastic is made from oil, and our oil supply is dwindling and being replenished at a very slow rate. By using recycled plastic, they could cut back on the amount of oil that is used," Mendelowitz said. Regarding its responsibility and concern for environmental issues, Coke's Website states that its "commitment to the envi- ronment is based on the principle that we shall conduct our busi- ness in ways that protect and preserve our environment." EnAct will be collecting bottles on the Diag today from 10 am. to 4 p.m. The organization plans to provide more opportu- nities throughout the year for students to donate bottles to the campaign.
