Letters Letters to the editor including the views of Superfan, Reza Breakstone Just market it! By Mark Francescutti The students have left Crisler Arena. What is Michigan doing to bring them back.? 4 5 6 Jackets, Blue Devls part of 'M's Chaenge After three very winnable games against Oakland, Detroitand Western Michigan to begin the season, Michigan has the privilege of heading south to face Georgia Tech on Dec. 1 in the Wolverines' contribution to the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. Then, on Dec. 11, Michigan hosts another powerhouse from the Atlantic Coast Conference when Duke comes to town to rekindle a storied rivalry. In some sense,'the game against Georgia Tech will be Michigan's only true road test before the Big Ten sea- son begins. The only other time the Wolverines leave Crisler Arena is to battle Boston College later in December, and the Eagles won just five games last season. Coach Brian.Ellerbe will be revisit- ing his recruiting past when he meets the Yellowjackets. During Ellerbe's interim season in 1997, he pushed hard to convince guard Tony Akins to play understudy behind Louis Bullock and Robbie Reid. But Akins opted not to leave his hometown of Berkmar, Ga., and instead stayed at Georgia Tech, where he struggled last year, his freshman season. The Yellowjackets lost Dion Glover a year earlier than expected to the NBA's Atlanta Hawks, but they still have reputable big men like Jason Collier, the former Indiana transfer who has found a home in Atlanta. The Georgia Tech game represents a swing game' for the Wolverines. With their relatively weak nonconference schedule, picking up a win where they might not be expected to would come in handy when making a case for post- season play. A win - or mere quality perfor- mance - against ,Duke would also boost Michigan in voters' eyes come tournament time. The Blue Devils enter the season ranked No. 10 nation- ally, though they return only five play- ers from last year's squad. Chapter Two Michigan coach Brian Ellerbe has received verbal commit- ments from two recruits already this season, but his search for a big man continues. They will compose the start of Ellerbe's second recruiting class. The newcomers: Avery Queen G 5-8 Bernard Robinson F 6-7 Pair to join 'M'in 2000 Michigan coach Brian Ellerbe has nailed down verbal commitments from two recruits already this fall, but he has still has yet to meet his biggest need - a quality post player. Ellerbe secured point guard Avery Queen and wing Bernard Robinson, and he still has two scholarships left. Losing out on Arthur Johnson from Detroit, as well as Andre Brown hurt Michigan's plans. With most of the top recruits opting to commit early this year, there is slim pickings for Ellerbe to feast on. Michigan has two choices; save one or both scholarships for next year, or try to find a diamond in. the rough from the second tier of big men, or the junior col- lege ranks, none of which sounds partic- ularly appealing. - Chris Duprey PRINTN LOW EST PRICES!
