Amidst the din of pop hits such as
the New Radicals' "We Only Get
What We (Give" and Montell Jordan's
"This Is How We Do It", the
Michigan women's basketball team
opened up its season on Saturday
afternoon with its annual Blue-
White scrimmage.
In spite of the sparse, quiet crowd,
which seemed to be in an Illinois-
induced stupor after the football
team's loss, the majority of the time,
the team still put on a good show for
the fans present.
Before the actual scrimmage, there
were a number of interactive games,
such as free-throw and three-point
contests pitting children against
members of the team.
But the scrimmage gave fans a
glimpse into what they can expect
from the team this season. As
Michigan coach Sue Guevara provid-
ed commentary from press row with
a microphone, the two sides played a
wide-open 20 minutes of basketball
featuring numerous fast breaks and
three-pointers.
"We only had five days of practice
before this, so we're going to get bet-
ter from how we performed today,"
Guevara said.
Among the stars in the scrimmage
were senior forward Stacy Thomas
and sophomore forward Raina
Goodlow. Goodlow, playing for the
white team, led all scorers with 12
points, including a pair of three-
pointers, while Thomas led the blue
team with II1 points.
These two players will be counted
on to provide leadership and guid-
ance for a neophyte Michigan squad
this year. Guevara cited the need for
some of the younger players to pick
up the slack for the team to be suc-
cessful.
"Definitely, both of our freshmen
(center LeAnn Bies and guard Infini
Robinson) will have to step up this
season," Guevara said. "Today, Bies
played well inside and Robinson
showed some flashes. Ruth Kipping
and Anne Thorius also came out
strong today."
One of Michigan's strengths this
season will be its depth. As they
showed in the scrimmage, the
Wolverines have a number of players
that they can rotate, several of whom
can play multiple positions.
"Whenever people ask me to
describe our team this year, one of
the first things that comes to mind is
our depth," Guevara said. "We are
going to have a very athletic, versa-
tile team."
Two years ago, Michigan qualified
for the NCAA Tournament, losing to
UCLA in the first round. Coming off
of last year's NIT appearance, the
Wolverines have set their sights high
for the new campaign. They have a
simple goal: they want to return to
the Big Dance this season.
"I think that the NCAA
Tournament is a very realistic goal
for us," Guevara said. "Actually, it'd
be a real disappointment for us if we
don't make it. We definitely have the
talent to get back there this year."
The Wolverines now have the

chance to get in two weeks of solid
practice before they open their sea-
son Nov. 5, when they square off
against Athletes In Action at Crisler
Arena. Until then, Saturday's scrim-
mage will have been the only chance
for the fans to see the players in a
game.
"The only thing that I would have
liked different is that I wish there
would have been more fans out to see
us," Guevara said. "But, what can
you do? I just hope that the fans who
did come had as good a time today as
we did."
The newcomers
The Michigan women's
basketball team has two
freshmen this season.
Here they are at a glace:
INFINI ROBINSON
Pos.: G
Ht: 5-9
Hometown: Detroit (Oak
Park High School)
Robinson, a lightning-
quick guard, brings an
added dimension to
Michigan's team. When
she is playing, look for the
Wolverines to run and
fast-break more often.
LEEANN BIES
Pos.: C
Ht.: 6-3
Hometown: Lakeview,
Mich. (Lakeview High
School)
Bies is a tall, lanky center
who will give the
Wolverines a good low-
post threat with her
moves and her shot-block-
ing ability.
