Shocking 'Shots' examnes '90s sex By Christopher Tkaczyk Daily Arts Writer Sex in the '90s is no new topic for films these days. Even in 1990, we saw the upcoming epidemic of post-hippie, post-disco, post-punk free sex. In the '90s, we still have the hippies' drugs and disco's ball and punk's danceable club music. It might be self-grandizing to assume that the only difference between now and then is that the twen- ty-somethings of now dress better. But the question remains: How exactly has sex changed for the '90s? Michael Cristofer look at the sexual Body Shots At Showcase and Quality 16 offers a shocking escapades of eight friends who meet for a night on the town at a local dance club, and who later pair up for a wild night. The film begins with a quiet scene of two clothed lovers, asleep side-by- side in the early hours of morning. Their calm par- adise is broken with a cut to a The middle body of the film is a flashback to the night before her rape, including the big dance club scene. The story of the rape is told by both partici- pants, as it were, through their view- points. This technique reminds one that there are always two sides, if not more, to every story. It also questions the issue of rape and its definition,- something that has been needed in film for at least 10 years. The story is also interspersed with scenes of monologue interviews in which the characters face the camera and discuss his or her views on sex. While the technique reminds one of a Real World confessional, the scenes work well. Each of these soliloquies cover areas of the sexual arena that could otherwise make the main drama too contrived and overbearing. Not since Ken Burns "Civil War" has this technique worked so well and, while "Body Shots" is not entirely a docu- mentary (the interviews were taken from the views of real people, inter- viewed by Cristofer), it deals with the subject matter through an honest approach. "Body Shots" is a dark film. Most of its duration is set at night, in a dance club with eerie blue neons and black lights. Even the daytime scenes are set indoors with the characters lit by shafts of light coming from windows or door- ways. It would be a misfire to assume that Cristofer kept the film within dark- ness to house it within tragedy's atmos- phere, for "Body Shots," with with all its well-acted drama and serious sexual issues, is still funny and entertaining. The twenty-somethings in the audience are sure to examine themselves and, if one wants to get moral about it, deter- mine what is good or bad about their sexuality. But "Body Shots" doesn't lecture or impose any moral judgment. Instead, it offers honest, truthful personal insight from completely different characters, all of whom address important issues of sex, regardless if one decides to agree with them. The tagline for the film boastfully proclaims itself to be the next one to "define a generation." That it does not. Instead, "Body Shots" offers an intelli- gent, slightly witty look at sexual rela- tionships of some American twenty- somethings near the end of the millen- nium. This film is not a model for soci- ety, however. The leading players of "Body Shots" are all attractive. Even the intentionally gooberish, dressed- for-golf Ron Livingston is a turn on, mostly due to his film-stealing perfor- mance. He is the clown of this sexual tragedy, and serves as this sex film's big, bright shining star. The remaining men and women" Reid, Amanda Peet, Emily Procter, Sybil Temchen, Jerry O'Connell, Sean Patrick Flanery and Brad Rowe, are all mega-hot, and if not already catching new rays of Hollywood light, are known to be up and coming. Cristofer's sense of full-circle fulfill- ment completes "Body Shots" in a way that others have strived to but unluckily failed. The topic of sex is approached from almost every angle, except home sexuality. Its obvious oversight is the film's only flaw. But "Body Shots" does manage to include everything from bondage and narcissism to AIDS and date rape. A humorous scene involving a how-to class on blowjobs, including a handful of plastic phalli, only stretches the limits of cinema. Maybe next time we'll see the actual act. frantic young blonde, Sara, played Tara Reid, who is carelessly driving in the rain. She is soaked and wearing only a nightgown. She arrives to her destina- tion, the apartment where the two lovers lie in slumber, and breaks the mood with fits and cries of rape. Save paper! Every college student, with maya the exception of those studying in a culinary school, needs one of these handy cookbooks. Access to the campus cafeteria is usually limited after freshman year, leaving many a student completely lost and helpless in an apartment or house kitchen. This cookbook includes the very basics of healthy cooking, but does not limit the variety. One will lea the recipes of cooking from as sim- pie a dish as a hard boiled egg to huevos rancheros to teriyaki salmon over pasta. The aspect of the cookbook that differentiates itself from others the most is the introduction. Not only does it describe the basics of cooking, but it gives a com- plete list (including elaborate descriptions) of cookware essentials, cooking terms, herbs and spice; conversions, and healthy substitu- tions. Each item contains a brief discus- sion with suggestions and recom- mendations on the techniques and usage of the ingredient or component listed. "Mom's Tips" are also found scat- tered through the pages presenting very helpful advice to the stude along with a pleasant touch of hon Charming symbols let the reader know whether the meal is vegetarian, author's choice, or super-quick. Many of the recipes come with a tip on what to serve on the side. Each has nutritional information, present- ing the calories, fat, protein, carbo- hydrates, cholesterol, and sodium. In essence, this cookbook consists of everything a beginner cook needs to survive on a college campus. Many first-year students who9 have the (currently unknown to them) privilege of the cafeteria often face late-night hunger, stemming from the absurdly early dinners in the dorms. Instead of squandering money on overpriced Ann Arbor pizza or run- nling down for grease-coated goodies at the underground food bars in the_ dorms, students can spend halfx1 money and a couple of- minut , preparing healthy microwave dishes like quick cod and tomato and pesto sandwiches.
