"The Michigan fight song occasionally popped into my head." Staying warm was also a challenge for the goalie. "My jersey was cold and damp so I tried to jump around and wiggle my feet to stay warm," Oakes said. Courtney Reid sparked Michigan's production in the second half. With 26:34 left to play in the game, Gannon rocketed the ball downfield to Reid, who was all alone. Reid turned from the right side of the circle and skidded the ball into the net. Two minutes later, Reid received a pass from sophomore midfielder Ali Balmer and directed it to sophomore midfielder Jessie Veith, who lofted the ball in the net for Michigan's fourth goal. Reid's second-half slaughtering of the Spartans continued, as she assist- ed on yet another goal. Off of a penalty corner sent in by Reid, Veith rebounded the ball for her second goal of the game, to fin- ish the massacre and give Michigan a 5-0 lead. Michigan coach Marcia Pankratz was elated with her team's effort. "Everybody played great," Pankratz said. "We took control and finished everything we set up. I couldn't be happier with our effort." The win keeps the Wolverines atop the Big Ten., Michigan has won nine of its last 10 games, and four in a row in the Big Ten. f 0i JOHN GUESS AGENCY INSURANCE FOR EDUCATIONAL EMPLOYEES JEREMY MENCHIK/Daily Freshman Molly Powers slides the ball past Michigan State goalie Mireille Evans in the Wolverines' 5-0 victory over the Spartans. By Dave Roth Daily Sports Writer With a goal and two assists against Michigan State, and two assists ver- sus Central Michigan, junior mid- fielder Courtney Reid has moved up to seventh on the list of all-time sin- gle season point scorers at Michigan. She has tallied 31 points this season, with eight goals, and 15 assists. Junior forward Kelli Gannon is the team's second-leading point scorer. Her two assists against Michigan State leave her two points away from 10th on the single-season point scor- ing list. And who does Gannon need to overcome to become 10th? Herself. Gannon racked up 27 points last sea- son. Michigan alum Julie Flachs owns the top spot on the list with her amazing 64 pointshaccumulated in the 1997 season. STATE CHAMPS: The Michigan State field hockey team has been one of the Wolverines' greatest rivals. In 49 games against the Spartans, the Wolverines have won 23, lost 20, and tied six. But, none of the current Michigan players would know much about it, as Michigan has triumphed the last five times the teams have played. Before playing in-state rivals Central Michigan and Michigan Sate, the Wolverines had only man- aged four goals in three games. They 'scored only one goal against Iowa and Penn State, and managed a pair of goals versus Northwestern. But once the Wolvernies played their in- state nemeses, they erupted for 10 lying six early in the season against Radford and Ball State. FRESHMAN FIRE: The Michigan freshman class has been strutting its stuff as of late. Against Central Michigan, mid- field Molly Powers netted a goal. Freshman forward Jessica Rose had a goal against Michigan State. Rose amassed several shots on goal and harrassed freshman Spartan goalie Mereille Evans. Freshman defender Stephanie Johnson has been a force to be reck- oned with. Johnson came up with some key defensive plays against the Spartans, and she appears to be one of the team's greatly improving play- ers. MAKE No MISTAKE ABOUT IT: Michigan's games this week come against Big Ten opponents Northwestern on Friday and Iowa on Sunday. The Wolverines beat both teams within the past ten days, but each game was at home, and each victory was by just one goal. The team is trying to prove the victories weren't flukes as they trav- el to Evanston and Iowa City. The game against Iowa may be especially challenging, as Iowa's only loss came against Michigan. Michigan's 1-0 victory against them on Oct. 8 was not very con- vincing. The game was even throughout, but defender Ashley Reichenbach capitalized on a penalty shot oppor- tunity. goals in just two games. five-goal outbursts have1 most Michigan has scored The two been the since tal- Don't Panic!!
