By Andy Latack Daily Sports Editor Michigan placekicker Jeff Del Verne has a sneaking suspicion about his brother Jim. Although the older Del Verne played at arch- rival Michigan State in the early '90s, Jeff thinks that his brother no longer bleeds green and white. In fact, he suspects that Jim Del Verne is a Wolverine at heart. "I caught him with a (Michigan) coat on the other day," Del Verne said. "I think when I'm not around he puts on Michigan stuff and runs around the house." But if Jim Del Verne or anyone else has any allegiance to the Spartans, there's no reason to hide it right now Michigan State, ranked No. 11 in the nation, has its fans feeling pretty proud to be Spartans. When No. 3 Michigan (2-0 Big Ten, 5-0 over- all) kicks off against Michigan State (2-0, 5-0) today, it will be the highest either team has been ranked coming into the game in more than 30 years. With both teams undefeated, the pre- game hype for this heated rivalry - which reaches high decibels in any given year - is at a fevered pitch on the eve of tomorrow's game. Whether it's around the office water cooler, on campus or over the phone, members of both factions are declaring war in their yearly quest for state bragging rights. "I think the intensity of this game is very spe- cial," Michigan coach Lloyd Carr said. "The state is probably pretty evenly divided. It's a game you know everybody on both sides wa to win verv badly" Michigan has recent history on its side, w ning the last three meetings with the Sparta And since 1970, the Spartans have managed beat their hated neighbors to the southeast j six times. Which means absolutely nothing to this yet participants. "You throw out the records and you throw t the past matchups, because it is such a t intrastate game," said Michigan nose tackle R Renes, a Holland, Mich. native. But with both teams entering the game at 5 for the first time in series history, there is mu more at stake tomorrow than merely braggi rights. The Wolverines and the Spartans are ea undefeated and enjoying lofty national rankin; so a loss tomorrow would be crushing to eiti team's hopes of a conference championship a beyond. "This year, because we're both 5-0, there the extra added incentive," Renes sa "Whoever wins is still in the hunt for the E Ten title and the national title:" Michigan State usually isn't harboring natic al title hopes midway through the season, t this year's team has some in East Lansing rea to forget about last year's 6-6 effort that was 1e home for the bowl games. But Michigan State coach Nick Saban ist going to let his players get distracted by hearii how good they are. State fans will have to listen to more N STAFF P ICKS All picks made against the spread. It's a low grumbling noise, but it's getting louder. It's the grumbling of the disen- chanted Spartans fan. Spartans fans are sick. They're sick of losing, and, more specifically, they're sick of losing to Michigan. They're sick of those Monday morning water-cooler conversations where they have to hear about Charles Woodson's spectacular one-handed interception. They're sick of those e-mails from supposed friends about Desmond Howard's diving catch in the end zone in 1991. They're sick of opening the paper and seeing rankings, with the Wolverines ranked third. For them, today isn't about a foot- ball game, it's not about a Rose Bowl race or the national title. It's about redemption. Redemption that's not coming. MICHIGAN RUSHING OFFENSE VER- SUS MICHIGAN STATE RUSHING. DEFENSE: After struggling to establish Michigan's running game over the first few weeks of the season, Anthony Thomas had a breakout game against Purdue last week, rush- ing for 116 yards. For the first time all season, Michigan coach Lloyd Carr put the ball in the hands of backs other the Thomas for a significant amount of time. Walter Cross and B.J. Askew both carried the ball more than usual, giving the Purdue defense a different look and giving Thomas an occasional breather. Expect to see more of the same today. But is that why Thomas and the Michigan running game were so suc- cessful? Or was it because 'Purdue's defense just isn't very good? Probably a combination of both. Michigan State's defense is good. The Spartans front seven have been ferocious against the run, although against primarily weak rushing teams. Take away Notre Dame, which rushed for 108 yards against the Spartans, and the most anyone was able to muster against the Spartans was Iowa's 42 yards last week. Thomas is just 74 yards short of 2,000 career yards, a feat established by just 17 backs in school history. He'll reach the mark, but probably not this week. Advantage: Michigan State MICHIGAN PASSING OFFENSE AGAINST MICHIGAN STATE PASSING DEFENSE: If it hasn't sunk in yet, it should: This Michigan team is a passing team. As sacriligious as that sounds, it's true. The passing game has been more effective and consistent than the running game. Senior Tom Brady has emerged as the better quarter- back, but Carr will continue to use both Brady and sophomore Drew Henson at quarterback. Look for sophomore wideout David Terrell to have the best game of his career. Terrell is not just a playmaker, he's a showman. Like Charles Woodson before him, he's one of those players with a knack for making the biggest plays in the biggest games. Last week, Terrell's offensive performance was slightly diminished - he had just 2 catches and a touchdown - because he played so much at cornerback, stop- ping Purdue's vaunting passing game. With his focus back on offense today, he just may amaze you. Advantage: Michigan MICHIGAN STATE OFFENSE AGAINST MICHIGA ING DEFENSE: This could be very int Two weeks ago, Michigan si Wisconsin's Ron Dayne, a better than either Lloyd (90.8 yards per game) or T.J. (40.8 yards per game). -
