88- The Michigan Daily - SportsMonday - October 4, 1999 'Star' Berendowsky is back scoring goals By Dan Dingerson 11ily Sports Writer When a team loses its all-time leadtng goal, assist and point scorer, it can be a major problem. But although the Michigan soccer team missed Amber Berendowsky while she was recovering from an ankle injury, it played well and moved to the top of the Big Ten standings.V Berendowsky has led the Wolverines in goals, game-winning goals, points and shots for the past two seasons. Entering this season, much of the same was expected of the senior. Unfortunately for Michigan, she was lost early in the season and forced to miss six games. In Berendowsky's absence, other Wolverines stepped to the forefront, led by freshman Abby Crumpton and junior Kacy Beitel. Crumpton is lead- ing the team in scoring this year, and continued that trend by notching a goal against Purdue. The injury was a disappointment for Berendowsky, coming in her final season with the team. She was forced to watch as her teamomates were fighting through the early eason. Last wekend Ber'ndowsky was cleared to step on the field. but it was not until this weekend that she really made an impact. On Sunday, she got to make only her second start of the season. "It was a great feeling to return to the starting line- up,- Berendowsky said. "When I walked into our meeting room and saw my name in the starting lineup I was so excited:' Berendowsky was quick to return to her role of leading scorer this weekend, as she scored two goals on four shots in the two games. The goals were Berendowsky's first crop of the year, she was held to an assist in her first game of the season before injury. "My role hasn't changed:' Berendowsky said. 'Abby (Crumpton) and Kacy (Beitel) and everyone have done a really good job of scoring this season. Hopefully I can continue to add to that" So far she has done just that - and the scoring is appreciated by the team. But it might have been even more important for Berendowsky herself. Athletes can somctims sumggte with returning from injury, both physically and mentally. The goal on Friday really got me going," Berendowsky said. "What it does is really bring y confidence back. The coaches have been telling rle that the ankle is all mental, so I just need to be confL- dent. and I will be fine." Michigan coach Debbie Belkin appreciates *0 rmtur of the all-time leading scorer because Michigan can finally put their entire offense on the field. "Amber's return is good for the team overali," Belkin said. "It gives tis more weapons, and we have more room for substitution' While the team has succeeded without Berendowsky in the lineup, she is a key addition for a team that is leading the BigTen, and is preparing for a game with one of the top teams in the country, Notr Dame. "It's defintely important for us," Belkin said. "Ev more so, it is important for Amber, this should gi her a lot of confidence." Wolverines win fourth straight in conference Senior midftelder Emily Schmitt joins in on jubilation at the Michigan Soccer Field. Michigan's defense put in another tremendous effort. Sophomore sweeper Alyssa Shaw's strong performance was complemented by the instrumental play of freshmen Andrea Kayal, Carly Williamson and Amy Sullivant. Purdue coach Robert Klatte was impressed by Michigan's play. "They are the best team that we have played this season," said Klatte. The Wolverines controlled Friday night's shutout against the Hoosiers from the start. The game marked Stewart's fourth shutout of the season. The Wolverines' defense smothered Indiana's offensive attack. The Hoosiers did not manage a shot until the 27th minute and were held to three shots on goal for the game. Wolverine Mari Hoff scored her third goal of the season in the 27th minute of the first half. Hoff directed an Emily Schmitt comer kick into the back of the goal. In the 37th minute, Berendowsky took a Beitel pass, drove down the right side, cut to the left and knocked a left- footed strike- past goalkeeper Ashley Davis. The score at halftime was 2-0. In the last minute of play, Laurie Peterson tallied her second goal of the season. Peterson received a Sullivant cross from the right side of the field and volleyed the ball into the net. Team 1.
