KNOw YOUR ROLE Sweat drips from Lund's brow as she stares across the court - into the eyes of freshman Jen Duprez in a recent practice. Lund and Hart take turns like a firing squad, bulleting serves at the rookie, but the freshman calls her leaders out - yelling "C'mon." With a powerful forehand of her own, Duprez whizzes the *all past the surprised Lund, who smiles with satisfaction. Trying to exemplify senior leadership, the two do whatever they can to help guide the younger players in the right direc- tion. "They are great captains, Duprez said. "They have been doing it for four years, consistently coming in early and stay- ing after late. It's so impressive how much they care." The two complement each other perfectly, with the business- like Lund leading by example on the court, mixed with the more outspoken Hart. "We have rules and I would try to stress that more so by pun- ishment in terms of running," Lund said. "But when I bring *rooke into it, she usually likes to talk it out. This gives us bal- ance between the two." ,With all the injuries this season, the co-captains have split as doubles partners - and each has taken control of a new dou- bles tandem in an attempt to win the doubles point. Hart teams up with freshman Joanne Musgrove, who hadn't played doubles until she came to Michigan this past fall - quite different from the experienced Lund. "We've actually raised our level of play since splitting up," Hart said. "When playing with a younger person, we're expect- to make more shots - improving our skills and forcing us o step up' The seniors are again playing at the same impressive level they played at as freshmen - Hart leads the team with 20 wins; and Lund won five of her last six matches since return- ing from a stomach injury. With the Big Ten Tournament rapidly approaching, they will Softball splits with Chippewas By Sam Duwe Daily Sports Writer It's said that bad news is easier to digest if you know it's coming. The Michigan softball team (29-8 overall) knew what dangers lay ahead when it traveled northbound to Mt. Pleasant yesterday, taking on Central Michigan (12-6). Splitting the doubleheader, the Chippewas shut out Michigan in the first game 3-0, and then held the Wolverines to only one run as Michigan won the sec- ond game, 1-0. "I'm never surprised by Central, they're always ready," Michigan coach Carol Hutchins said. "We're lucky to leave here with a win." Problems that have plagued the Wolverines all year reared up once again - the Wolverines had trouble putting, the bat to the ball. Also hurting Michigan were the four errors they made in the first game. "When you lose the first game, you're happy to split," Hutchins said. Jamie Gillies took the loss for the Wolverines in the first game. She gave up five hits and three runs to bring her record to 6-2 on the season. In the second game, Marissa Young took the mound, and took over. She had a no-hitter going until the forth inning when the Chippewas hacked a single. However, the base runner wouldn't be going anywhere but back to the dugout. Central Michigan had only one other hit for the game. Young took the win and improved her record to 11-I. "She threw pretty well," Hutchins said. "When you score one run you're lucky to win a game." The Wolverines only run of the day came in the seventh, when Chrissy Garza had an RBI single to score Mary Conner. Ohio State will visit Alumni Field this Friday for Michigan's next Big Ten con- test. The Wolverines will look to start another winning streak, and to condition for the post season. - Central Michigan Life assistant sports editor Jeremy Stephens con- tributed to this report. 'M ITSU YO 'ACHI/Dai'y A twist of fate brought Brooke Hart to Michigan, where she has excelled as one of the Wolverines' leaders. need to keep it up. Although the Wolverines are 1-5 in the con- ference thus far, the important part hasn't begun yet. "No matter what you do during the season, it doesn't mean anything if you don't do well in the (Big Ten) Tournament," Lund said. Though their eligibility will have expired, the two captains will be finishing up their classes next year in Ann Arbor, and will certainly not be strangers to the Varsity Tennis Center - stopping in from time to time to help out in any way possible. "I love the game, and I'm not ready to give it up," said Lund, who will attempt to join the pro circuit after graduation. After taking off her Michigan uniform, Hart has aspirations for a career in finance or consulting. Based on the captains' past experiences, no one is going to count them out - for their dreams can definitely come true. It wouldn't be the first time. . .,In. At campus.HotDispatch.com. "I can't worry myself with things for which I have no control," Carr said. "I am just going on the fact that ever since Drew came to Michigan he wanted to play football." And behind Henson will be two backups that have no game experience -Mignery and Navarre. Carr said he ill make a backup decision this fall. THAT MICHIGAN DEFENSE: In a three-game span last season, the Wolverines gave up their second-high- est point total ever in that amount of time. Michigan allowed more than 30 points in losses to Michigan State and Illinois, and also to Indiana in a close victory. And that late-season slide left many fans holding their breath. But a win over Ohio State and an range Bowl victory against Alabama gave doubters a reason to breathe again. With the loss of senior linebackers Dhani Jones, Ian Gold and James Hall, even more questions surround the 'D.' "I think the defense struggled at times, but I don't think it was any cer- tain people," Carr said. "Some people want to point the finger, but that is not the whole story. I think the defense will be better this season. "We do have a number of guys returning but also some inexperience." Carr mentioned juniors Eric Brackins, Larry Foote and Victor Hobson as players that will step up this season. He also mentioned junior Eric Wilson, junior Shawn Lazarus and Bowman as players to look for up front. At the cornerback position, juniors Todd Howard and Cato June and senior James Whitley will all return. Carr also mentioned that Terrell, who played cor- ner at times in 1999, might also pull such double-duty this season. "I need to put him in the position where it can help the team most," Carr said. "It is certainly a distinct possibili- ty" that he will play cornerback. THE SCHEDULE: With no Kickoff Classic, no Notre Dame and no Syracuse on tap, this year's nonconfer- ence schedule includes Bowling Green, Rice and UCLA - a schedule that is much weaker than past seasons. But Carr says he doesn't listen to the criticism. "I think UCLA is one year removed from being a great team," Carr said. "They have an outstanding program and it will be a big test. "Rice runs the wishbone, which makes them difficult to prepare for. They are well-coached and dangerous. And Bowling Green in the opener will be a challenge because there is always uncertainty the first time" teams play. Carr also said the Big Ten will be a challenge this year as one of the tough- est conferences in the nation - and the number of Big Ten teams in bowl games last season proves that. "I don't think there is a conference in the country as strong from top to bot- tom as the Big Ten,' Carr said. K. Abend Z. Acevedo- Gonzalez C. Adcock R. Aggarwal A. Aguirre S. Ahmad J. Ahn D. Aho C.
