In 1998, Yank Coble, an AMA Board of Trustee member, said that , ome alternative therapies and herbal reme- es are quackery" because more often than not, they have not been scientifically proven and are ineffective. "At best, they're a waste of time and money; at worst, dangerous and even deadly' Coble said. But Christine Maxi-Reeves of Ann Arbor tells a different story. She is among the reported 33 percent of American adults who seek alternative therapy. Maxi-Reeves, who has complications includ- ing diabetes and a broken tail bone, has sought Sief through acupuncture every 10 days for the ast six months at Head-to-Toe Therapy in Ann Arbor. The results, she said, speak for themselves. -- my blood sugar is normal now, I exercise more and make healthier choices when I eat," she said. In recent years, alternative therapies such as acupuncture, which has existed for more than 4,000 years, have grown to become some of the more accepted types of alternative therapy. The reasons why many people seek these tech- niques include feelings of dissatisfaction with conventional care, which may be thought of as ineffectual, expensive or too focused on curing the disease rather than maintaining the health, according to an AMA study. When Pattie Postel, the coordinator for the Professional Education- Program at the School of Business Administration, injured herself in a major auto accident three years ago, she looked to acupuncture to treat her traumatic brain and nerve damage. ago - were "cured" through the Five Ele- ments style of acupuncture, which takes a more holistic and seasonal look at therapy. "When I walk out of a session, I feel like a gar- den that's been tended - I feel watered, irrigated and the sun has been cast upon me'" she said. The forms of acupuncture are numerous and the costs can vary. Head-to-Toe Japanese acupuncture specialist Abby Humphrey charges $55 for her first session, when she checks for blockages in the flow of the "chi ," and $40 for each additional session after- wards, where she inserts needles of varying size through the skin in problematic areas of the body. "It's nothing that you can generalize about ... I try to use different methods for each person's needs," she said. Typically no blood is drawn from the pro- cedure and the level of discomfort varies issues, problems sleeping, knee and back aches, Humphrey said. Brodie Borris, an Ann Arbor acupuncturist and oriental herb specialist, has also used his skills to treat several terminally ill patients. "Acupuncture and herbs were the only medi- cine in China and in Asia for thousands of years. They can be used to treat anything, even cancer ..for chemotherapy, he said. The ideal treatment, both AMA officials and alternative therapy specialists agree, is curing the patient with minimal side effects and harm. "The bottom line is - if standing on your head and rubbing your stomach can be scien- tifically proven to cure a person's ills without unacceptable side effects - there is no rea- son why that technique cannot and should not be used by patients and physicians," Coble said. RC Continued from Page 1 everything in his capacity to uphold the principles of the RC, which stresses collaboration and deflects competition. "My basic position is that the RC educational philosophy is a very good one," he said. Razgunas said the current system does not take away opportunities from other LSA students because every student has opportunity to become RC students in the first place. "Even if that is the case, it's, something that is given to every LSA student," she said. Razgunas and other RC students have organized a mass meeting for students who wish to protest the grade system. LSA Student Government Presi- dent B.J. Orandi said the group has not had a chance to address the issue. BEAUTIFUL. HOUSE. 5-6 pr ope. a mii linncampus Fre prkg,.. Idry.. (urn., dswhr. Reni nc~oi ale Call 6 3-0730. BEiST L.OCATION! 536 S.
