"Who Wants to Be a A Millionaire?" Of course this is a successful show with half a dozen imi- tators. Whoever thought of combining mindless, banal trivia with obscene wealth has really tapped into something special. 2. "The Sopranos" Who wants to be in the Mafia? Apparently the critics. HBO's "The Sopranos" has people ecstatic about its season premiere this month. The show is an example of how good TV can be and how everyone loves wholesome stories about the Mob. 3.Y2K Really, it's going to be the year 2000? There has never been anything more annoying than the hype and coverage of what turned out only to result in some really cool footage of the Eiffel Tower. 4. "Ally" and "Snoops" cancelled It looks like David E. Kelley might need a rest. Though he's known for quality programs, whoever thought of making a half hour show that used old "Ally McBeal" plots made a bad call. Maybe it was Regis. 5. "Buffy" episode pulled The WB show "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" had to cancel a show where the cast destroys their high school with guns and bombs. The episode was cancelled because of the killings at Columbine where Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold used guns and bombs in their plan to destroy their school. 6. FOX yanks "Action" Blame it on a bad time slot, or getting moved around to accommodate the World Series, but in the end "Action" was just too good for TV Critics loved the sendup of a sleazy movie exec and everyone else hated it. Perhaps Hollywood is more amused by itself than anyone else is. 7. Critics relate to "Freaks and Geeks" The NBC show about suburban kids in the early eighties has impressed the critics. It takes risks, like having Eli, the mentally challenged kid, dump Lindsay. This was depressing but different. It has moved to Mondays which will hopefully improve the ratings. 8. Clooney leaves "ER" "ER" has not been entertaining for a while but this was the last straw. The show officially sucks. Someone should put it out of its misery. 9. "The Tom Green Show" MTV can be so bad yet so good. "The Tom Green Show" has taken assault humor to a new level. Who could not be entertained by watching a grown man interrogate his parents about their sex life or put dog feces on a microphone and ask people why they like to live in New Jersey? He's brilliant and much funnier than anyone who used to be considered funny, like the original SNL cast. 10. The rebirth of "Friends" Once again, "Friends" is officially funny. The show started strong but was unbearable to watch for a few years. Examples: Who cares if Ross marries some boring English girl? We get it, Chandler's sarcastic. However, when Ross married Rachel at a chapel in Vegas when they were drunk and never got it annulled, that was funny. Much of the newfound laughter appeared through the reg- ulars' discovery of physical humor. Rachel and Phoebe ran through the park like little and extremely spastic kids, and Monica and Ross performed their dance routine from junior high on Dick Clark's "Rockin' New Year's Eve." They're a lit- tle more dorky and a lot more loveable. It's nice to have them back. -Caitlin Hall, TV/New Media Editor TOP 10 BOOKS (No Particular Order) BONE BY BONE Peter Matthiesen HANNIBAL Thomas Harris STIFFED Susan Faludi KING, A STREET STORY John Berger A GESTURE LIFE Chang-rae Lee JUNETEENTH Ralph Ellison HEARTS IN ATLANTIS Stephen King CONVERSATIONS WITH WILDER Cameron Crowe WALKIN' THE DOG Waiter Moseley CARELESS LOVE: THE UNMAKING OF ELVIS PRESLEY Peter Guralnick -Daily Books Staff _____ ____ ____ ____ .1L &wsUda " - WT , E E LC O M E S YT * Shawn Colvin * Arm Gut hrie Great Big Sea* Beth Nielsen Chapman Hot Club of Cowtown.Anne Hills Fred Eaglesmith * David Barrett Mattatroba Robert Jones University of Mchigan's own amazing A Capella groups perform their special welcome-back winter concert. t/a4ddaqs, 4waw 3 @:30pm a lekagu wsdegowas4 Located at the lower level of the Michigan League 911 N.
