and instead use their unigname and password,
McElvain said.
"Professors are not supposed to post Social
Security numbers in conjunction with grades,"
McElvain said. Use of partial Social Security
numbers is permitted, he added, but "I don't
think it will happen much in the future."

Assistant marketing Prof. Jie Zhang said she
only uses the last four digits of the Social Secu-
rity number when posting grades. "it has to be
done very carefully," Zhang said, adding that
the reason she uses the number is because it is
what the Registrar's Office provides.
Economics lecturer Paula Malone said she
uses the partial number that students fill in on
Scantron forms, which does not have to be a
Social Security number.
While some students rarely worry about pro-

fessors using their Social Security numbers,
others are uncomfortable with it.
"I feel like its an invasion of your privacy,"
said Music freshman Abigail Sebaley, who
noted that she always gives the ID number that
appears on the front of her M-Card.
"It's not safe because your Social Security
number is like your life," LSA freshman
LaChina Algers said, adding that she feels that
anybody could take her number.
But LSA senior Wesley Hsu said that

although he feels uncomfortable about giving
out his Social Security numbers for mail orders
and credit cards, he does not mind its use by
professors.
"Usually, I trust the professors to use it
appropriately," Hsu said.
There are no legal reasons that organizations
must use Social Security numbers, said Steve
Richardson, public affairs specialist for the
Social Security Administration. "You have the
right to question why they, are asking for your

Social Security number."
Only in the past 10 to 12 years has access
to Social Security numbers become problem-
atic because of increased availability, said
Richardson, noting that the most commnon
felony resulting from Social Security fraudi is
credit fraud.
"It's something that we are cautious about n..
but I would not put it in something of dramatic;
proportions," SSA Deputy Commissioner
William Halter said.

University Housing at the University of
Michigan will conduct its Commercial
Vendor Fair at three campus area locations
(Central, Hill, and North campuses) during
its 2000 Fall Student Move-In, Aug. 30-Sept.
1. Those approved to participate in the
Commercial Vendor Fair are also eligible to
participate in the Summer Orientation
Vendor Bazaar, June 4-Aug. 9, at -no
additional costs. The Commercial Vending
Programs offer commercial agents a venue
for selling items to students, who wish to
acquire items for outfitting their residence
hall rooms. Vending by non-registered
commercial agents is not permitted at or near
U-M residence halls during the Fall Move-In
or at all during Summer Orientatiop.
Guidelines for the Commercial Vending
Programs provide info. about the two pgrrus.
This year's registration fee is $200, and each
10ft. by 18ft. vendor space is $150 o
pickup a copy of the Guidelines, you mnay
visit one of two area locations: The Ann
Arbor City Hall's Building Department; or
U-M's Housing Information Office (8am-
5pm), 515 East Jefferson (corner of Jefferson
and Maynard), 1011 Student Activities
Building in Ann Arbor. To receive a copy of
the Guidelines by mail, contact Housing
Information by telephone at (734) 763-3164,
or via e-mail at "housing@umich.edu". All
eligible apps. must be received in-house by
Mon., May 8, 2000, at 5pm. Uni. Housing is
not responsible for apps. arriving (for
