The Michigan ,Daily - Wednesday, March 29, 2000 - 7 Trend of perscription drug abuse rises DRUGS Continued from Page I :Tarm, a local drug treatment facility. Students who use prescription drugs for med- ica urposes often supply those who want the Cdr to get high or to stay awake. "I was always given way more than I ever needed," said one University student, who wished to remain anonymous. "People come and ask for it. I knew people could get their hands on tons of different things and if it was going to be between my Ritalin or over the counter speed, caffeine, cocaine or anything else they need to keep awake I would rather they used something that works. I've never seen it have any bad effects on any- body'the student said. The student also said that while friends offer to pay for the medication, it is given away for free because of the drug's low cost after the help of medical insurance. Because of students like thisone, several col- lege health services have reevaluated their pre- scription processes. "One thing we did was to make sure we firmly cemented and standardized our assessment process," Heiligenstein said. "We tightened our policies for people on medication. There is one lost or stolen prescription refill per person." Another University student acknowledged the upward trend in the illicit use of prescription, drugs to increase the effects of other sub- stances. "It makes getting drunk so much easier - it's a money saver. Have three beers and a vicodin and you're done for the night," said another Uni- versity freshman, who wished to remain anony- mous. The student also said it was no trouble obtain- ing drugs such as Ritalin and Valium. "People always have them." The student said that prescription drugs are a great help as study aids. "Ritalin gets you focused. It's just like cocaine if you take enough." - The Associated Press and Daily Staff Reporters David Enders and Hanna LoPatin contributed to this report. LSA-SG Continued from Page 1 Candidates who have to wait another week for results expressed annoyance. "It feels like I'm cursed," said Eno- ra Priest, a current representative who had to wait two weeks for results to be released in last year's election due to voter fraud. "But they're being quicker this year. I just want to know." Orandi said he felt the questions surrounding Englander did not reflect on the Wolverine candidates for LSA- SG. Englander was not associated with the Wolverine candidates for LSA-SG. "It had nothing to do with us," Orandi said. "Even so, the MSA slate ran a very clean campaign. We were very disappointed that four or five peo- ple decided to completely ignore what the student body wanted." Blue Party candidate Adam Damerow said his work continues, despite his loss. "My first concern is making sure there's a smooth transition," Damerow said. "I knew it was going to be a close race. Both parties were qualified I wish nothing but the best of luck to B.J and Erin." Pai expressed disappointment that a scandal had to take away from the elections. "It's unfortunate that in a midst of an election based on real issues we had to encounter a scandal" Pai said. "I have full confidence in the judiciary and (the elections director) Heidi Lubin that they will look at the situation from all angles and make sure it is speedy so the gov- ernment can resume work." 0 r $ INTERNET STARTUP $ Look~ for deliverers for new company GREW PAY - Must have Car!! $8/hr + bonuses.
