The Michigan Daily - Thursday, March 23, 2000 - 7A Dow Jones Industrial Average, NASDAQ and S&P 500 Composite for Week Mar. 16 - Mar. 22 DJIA NASDAQ S&P 500 Close Change Close Change Close Change 3/16 10,630.60 +499.19 4,717.39 +134.77 1,458.47 +66.33 3/17 10,595.23 -35.37 4,798.13 +80.74 1,464.47 +6.00 3/20 10,680.24 +85.01 4,610.00 -188.13 1,456.63 -7.84 3/21 10,907.34 +227.10 4,711.68 +101.68 1,493.87 +37.24 3/22 10,866.70 -40.64 4,864.75 +153.07 1,500.64 +6.77 HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE WEEK: The Dow enjoyed its largest one day gain last Thursday when an infla- tion friendly report came out concerning the core Producer Price Index. It took away concerns from investors that the Federal Reserve would increase interest rates by more than 25 basis points. When the Fed actually met Tuesday it confirmed everyone's beliefs and raised two key interest rates, the overnight fed fund rate and the discount rate, by a quarter point. It was the fifth hike since June 1999 and committee members warned of future increases if inflation pressure doesn't get under control. The NASDAQ has rebounded the last two days, especially in the biotech and chip sector, after the selling pressure of last week following the negative news. The S&P set a new record yesterday as it closed above 1,500 for the first time. WHAT IS THE DOw JONES INDUSTRIAL AVERAGE? The DJIA represents 30 stocks traded on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and NASDAQ. They are all major factors in their respective indus- tries. These stocks are widely held by individuals and institutional investors. Many financial advisers think of it as a good indicator in telling whether the NYSE is doing well or poorly. WHAT IS THE NASDAQ COMPOSITE? The NASDAQ is the fastest growing stock market in the United States due to it being a screen-based stock market, compared to a trading floor market like the NYSE. It also has almost all of the technological stocks available for trading, which has proved to be a very volatile industry in the last couple of years. WHAT IS THE S&P 500? The S&P 500 is a marketvalue weighted index composed of 400 indus- trial stocks, 20 transportation, 40 financial, and 40 utility. It is a far broader measure than the DJIA because it takes into account 500 different stocks traded on the two main exchanges (NYSE and NASDAQ-AMEX) compared to the DJIA's 30 all traded on the NYSE and NAS DAQ. - Compiled bv Daily Staff Reporter Kevin Magnusonfiom wire reports. SNRE Continued from Page IA count in the classrooms?" SNRE senior Sharon Renier asked. Many students claimed a merger would damage the program's autono- my and sense of community that drew them to it in the first place. "I would have never considered U of M if this was a department in LSA,' SNRE senior Amanda Edmonds said. Edmonds continued to say that she was "overwhelmed by the personal attention" given to her as a freshman, and she feared that "individual ser- vices and that personal attention" would be lost in a merger. Other students questioned the com- mittee's lack of SNRE student repre- sentation. "It scares me that LSA has a lot of control over what happens in our school," SNRE sophomore Kyle Schott said. But, the committee is still not fully formed and has not met yet. Both Mazmanian and English Prof. John Knott, who will chair the com- mittee, said the integration of th& SNRE undergraduate program is only a possibility. "I think a lot of the students' fears are misplaced," Knott said. Mazmanian said after the forum that he was pleased with the turnout and the opportunity to hear his students' concerns. He acknowledged that a merger with LSA was a possibility, but he also said if that were to happen, there "is no necessary reason we wouldn't sustain our community." DOLLAR Continued from Page 1A "By the end of April there will be 500 million golden dol- lars in circulation. The U.S. Mint has paid careful attention to historical detail in the creation of the coin. "We have worked closely with the Native American com- munity in the design of the coin. The coin is historically authentic because we consulted the Shoshone people because they had the most direct knowledge of Sacajewea," White said. To kick off the introduction of the Sacajewea coin, a rigor- ous advertising campaign has been launched to familiarize the public with the coin. A modern day George Washington appears in the television ads and is seen using the golden dol- lar for all kinds of transactions - from buying a hotdog to purchasing a beverage from a vending machine. The issuance of the new dollar coins, which cost more to mint but can remain in circulation much longer than paper currency, will also save taxpayers money. "Over the long run the coin is cost effective. The average life of a coin is 30 years. For the dollar bill it is 18 months," White said. The golden dollar is not the first dollar coin to be intro- duced to the public. The Eisenhower dollar coin was minted in the 1930s, and the Susan B. Anthony coin made its debut in 1971. The failure of what became known as the "SBA "We have worked closely with the Native American community in the design." - Michael White U.S. Mint spokesman coin" has been attributed to its close semblance to the quar- ter, said Suzanne Heffner, senior manager of media rela- tions for the Chicago branch of the Federal Reserve Board. The golden dollar coin is clearly different from the quar- ter in its color, form and design. In just 14 weeks, the gold- en dollar has already exceeded the SBA's circulation in its, first 14 years, according to the U.S. Mint Website. Although the launch of the golden dollar has gone smooth- ly, some have expressed doubts about the coin's acceptance. "I don't think it'll catch on because people, especially men like to carry wallets. And men predominantly use paper cur- rency,' Law second-year student Chris Nemeth said. But others said the coin could make the problem of stub- born vending machines obsolete. "It'll make things a lot easier because you don't have to worry about the dollar feeder thing taking your dollar," LSA' junior Heoniat Hillock said. 4 MILLION DOLLAR GAME shows? Forget em!
