HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE WEEK: Yesterday investors' money transferred from the recently struggling
technology sector and went into industrial stocks like DuPont, 3M, and Johnson & Johnson. The NAS-
DAQ has lost 465 points over the last three days but is still up 13 percent since the beginning of the year.
Meanwhile the Dow is down 13 percent in the same time period. On Tuesday, the NASDAQ saw its second
worst loss in history as biotech stocks plunged when an agreement was made between the U.S. and Britain
decided to share information on a project concerning human genetic patterns. This squashed many biotech
company's plans to use the data they had collected and sell that information to drug makers and
researchers. The NASDAQ saw a record close over 5,000 for the first time last Thursday but has seen
investors take profits since then.
WHAT IS THE DOw JONES INDUSTRIAL AVERAGE? The DJIA represents 30 stocks traded on the
New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and NASDAQ and are all major factors in their respective indus-
tries. These stocks are widely held by individuals and institutional investors. Many financial advisers
think of it as a good indicator in telling whether the NYSE is doing well or poorly.
WHAT IS THE NASDAQ COMPOSITE? The NASDAQ is the fastest growing stock market in the
U.S. due to it being a screen-based stock market, compared to a trading floor market like the NYSE. It
also has almost all of the technological stocks available for trading, which has proved to be a very
volatile industry in the last couple of years.
WHAT IS THE S&P 500? The S&P 500 is a marketvalue weighted index composed of 400 indus-
trial stocks, 20 transportation, 40 financial, and 40 utility. It is a far broader measure than the DJIA
because it takes into account 500 different stocks traded on the two main exchanges (NYSE and
NASDAQ-AMEX) compared to the DJIA's 30 all traded on the NYSE and NASDAQ.

HAZING
Continued from Page IA
Greek members and submitting a
report to IFC, Panhel and BGA.
"This will be a report which will
turn into a policy that will govern the
Greek community but hopefully the
new policy will also serve as a model
to other communities facing the same
hazing problems across the nation,"
Silver said.
Instead of defining hazing, the task
force will attempt to define the prob-
lems associated with hazing in the
Greek community.
"Anytime you specifically define
something there always will be a
loophole - hazing is anything that
endangers anyone mentally, physical-
ly or academically, so that's where the
concern is for the University," said a
task force member who asked that his
name not be printed. The purpose
"isn't to define hazing but to figure
out what to do about it," he said.
Both Silver and the task force
member said the problem of hazing
goes beyond the pledge term, with
ramifications even after fraternity ini-
tiation.
"How do you all of a sudden after
pledge term respect someone who has
beaten you for the past four months?"
the task force member asked.
Yet not all Greek members feel this
is a question that needs to be asked.
One freshman fraternity member,
who wished to remain anonymous,
said hazing is a necessary part of the
pledge term.
"It makes you tougher. It makes
you able to handle mental stress," he
said.
The student said he was hazed last.
semester by older members of his
house, but felt no resentment.
"You have to take it with a grain of
salt,' he said. "There was no feeling
of them against us. It was just some-
thing we had to do to get in ... It
shouldn't make you hate the older
guys.
The freshman did admit that he
wouldn't participate in the hazing of
next year's pledge class.
"It's just not me," he said. He
added that the members of his pledge
class that were most likely to haze
were the ones who had been hazed
the worst themselves. "But I would
tell (pledges) to clean," he said.
The fraternity member saidhe
doubted IFC's ability to put an end to
hazing.
But Silver remains optimistic.
"They have a hard challenge ahead
of them, but I think they will suc-
ceed," he said.

GHB
Continued from Page 1A
Although GHB has been known as
a date rape drug, experts have noted
that the drug has increasingly been
used for recreational purposes.
While the University is working to
educate students on this issue, interim
UHS Director Robert Winfield said
the "paramount problem" on campus
continues to be alcohol abuse.
"This is not to diminish the dangers
ofGHB, but it is our impression that it
is not the major problem. Our public
health community has be focused, and
right now, the focus is on alcohol,"
Winfield said, citing a study conduct-
ed last fall by the Substance Abuse
Research Center concluding that
binge drinking was a problem on cam-
pus.
SAPAC Education and Training
Coordinator Alicia Rinaldi said that in
relation to date rape drugs, alcohol is
a more widespread problem.
The issue of sexual assault and
drugs "has been going on for awhile,"
Rinaldi said. There are "many differ-
ent levels, and many different drugs,"
she added.
The University plans to integrate
more information about GHB into its
orientation programs.
Office of New Student Programs
Assistant Director Christian Garcia
said alcohol use is a subject specifical-
ly targeted in the University's fresh-
man orientation, but there is a "very
strong possibility" GHB education
will be added.
