The Michigan Daily - SportsMonday - March 13, 2000 - 7B not in the zone: Divers fail to qualifly Bk ft*min Singr Daily Sports Writer Four Michigan divers - three from the women's team and one from the men's - 'went into the Diving Zone C meet to earn a spot in the NCAAs. None of them did. . Walking away empty handed was not only a disappoint- ment, but a surprise for the Wolverines. Men's senior tri-captain Josh Trexler advanced to the NCAAs for the first time last season, where he earned an honorable mention All-America in the three-meter dive, and It good coming into the meet this weekend. "I was fairly confident (about qualifying)," Trexler said. "I did well at the Big Tens and that was a good measuring stick." After finishing eighth in both the one- and three-meter dives though, Trexler felt that his days as a diver for Michigan were probably over. "After the one-meter, I started to think this is it' Trexler said. "I had a pretty nice ride. I have no regrets." Despite no Wolverines qualifying, Michigan diving coach Dick Kimball said that his team performed well. He also *oted an improvement by the women. "Our girls did well this weekend," Kimball said. "They dived better than in the Big Ten." Senior Hanna Shin led the Wolverines in all three events. Shin and junior Amanda Crews placed ninth and tenth respectively in the platform dive. Trexler also finished in the top ten on the tower for the men, coming in fifth. Junior Theresa DeSitter made her first appearance in a zone meet, coming in 27th in the one-meter and 21st in the three-meter. The only way divers can represent their school in the NCAAs is to place in the top six at the zone meet. "In diving you get one chance to make the cut," Kimball Diving through the season. Even though the four Michigan divers competing in the Diving Zone C this past weekend did not qualify for the NCAAs, they have many accomplishments to be proud of this season. Senior Josh Trexler Qualified for the NCAA Zone Meet in the one-meter springboard, three-meter springboard and platform events. * Placed in the top five in each of the diving events to help his team win a Big Ten Conference title. * Named Big Ten Conference Diver of the Week five times this season. Senior Hanna Shin Qualified for the NCAA Zone Meet in the one-meter springboard, three-meter springboard and platform events. * Finished 18th in the Big Ten Conference Championships in three- meter diving, and fifth in platform diving. Junior Amanda Crews Qualified for the NCAA Zone Meet in the one-meter springboard, three-meter springboard and platform events.. Finished 1th in the Big Ten Conference Championships inthree- meter diving and sixth in exhibition platform diving. Junior Theresa DeSitter * Qualified for the NCAA Zone Meet in the one-meter springboard, three-meter springboard and platform events. Finished 21st in the three-meter diving at the Big Ten Conference Championships. said. "The nature of this meet is really difficult.' Kimball pointed out that diving well in the Big Ten Championships doesn't get you anywhere as far as reaching the NCAAs is concerned. He cited as an example the women divers of Ohio State who took the one- and three-meter dive at the conference championship. Neither one qualified this weekend. "Things change from week to week in diving," Kimball said. "You have a hot meet and question, 'Can I do it again?"' Trexler does not feel that he had a poor meet, but others just had bettef days. "I think the biggest disappointment is that I won't be able to put the Michigan suit on anymore and represent Michigan," Trexler said. "I didn't picture myself going out this way." PBA: Weber, you're out of your element AKRON, Ohio (AP) - Pete Weber has been suspended for the remainder of the 2000 season by the Professional Bowlers Association for "conduct unbecoming a professional" during a Tour event in the fall in Bay City, Michigan. The Hall of Famer also was fined and will not be eligible for any PBA nation- al, regional or invitational tournaments. Following the nine-month suspension, Weber, 37, will remain on probation for 18 months. * Weber, who has had a history of con- duct problems, already was on proba- tion for an incident in Seattle in 1996 and has served five suspensions during his career. PBA commissioner Mark Gerberich said Weber was disciplined for excessive profanity. "He had very bad behavior in front of the crowd," Gerberich said. "He was on probation. When you're on probation and you have conduct unbecoming a professional, you are automatically suspended and the com- missioner determines the length." Weber, who trails only Walter Ray Williams Jr. on the PBA's all-time money list with more than $2.2 million, had appealed the suspension to Gerberich, but the decision was upheld. Weber was suspended for three months in 1998 and Gerberich said the latest penalty was more severe because of repeated violations. "When you set a sentence, no matter what the circumstances are, you have to look at the track record," Gerberich said. Weber, the 1980 PBA Rookie of the Year, ranks seventh in career titles with 25. He is one victory behind his father, Dick Weber, Mike Aulby and Don Johnson, who are tied for fourth on the all-time list. Weber was inducted into the PBA Hall of Fame in 1998 in his first year of eligibility and joins Aulby, Billy Hardaway and Johnny Petraglia as the only players to win bowling's Triple Crown. The three events are the Tournament of Champions, the PBA National Championship and the U.S. Open. MEN'S Continued from Page 1B The Wolverines' 36.1 score on high bar provides a scary prospect for, the tumblers; in the Big Ten and NCAA championships, the competition will not allow for slip-ups. "We can't have one bad event (in the championship meets)," Golder said. Golder thinks the narrow win may inspire a more determined effort in prac- tice this week. "This meet puts a big scare into the guys;" Golder said. One of the guys who has been follow- ing Golder's edict for hit consistency has been Scott Vetere. Friday against Michigan State, he notched four scores above 9.8, including a sterling 9.95 per- formances on the rings and parallel bars. Vetere is confident that as a team, the Wolverines will rally from Friday's sus- pect win to fulfill their season-long expectations. "We're going to bring it all together next week - we're going to get more aggressive;" Vetere said. Michigan was without Justin Toman on Friday, who was held out due to sus- picion of a slightly strained knee. An MRI Saturday confirmed the injury. Next week at Big Tens, he will likely compete in the all-around, though he may forego the floor exercise and land easier dismounts on the other events.
