LOCAL/STATE The Michigan Daily iDEMS Continued from Page 1A o1 losing it to Republicans in 1994, Michigan elected ".'officials will enjoy prominence in national politics. Bonior, who is currently unopposed when his rival dropped out of the race last week, would become House majority leader. Although Bomor remains unopposed for the time being he does not plan to lessen his campaign efforts. "I think everyone is vulnerable in an election unless you get out and talk to the people,' Bonior said. Dingell is up for reelection as well but said he was 'Xot worried about his opponent. "Worry doesn't win elections, hard work does." he said. Dingell would become Commerce Committee chairman if the Democrats take control of the House. But the most notable state campaign is the Senate race as U.S. Rep. Debbie Stabenow (D-Lansing) runs up against the Republican incumbent Sen. Spencer Abraham in November. Michigan legislators are also facing rigorous elec- tions in the fall where Democrats hope to win back the Michigan House of Representatives that they lost in 1998. State Sen. Gary Peters (D-Bloomfield Twp.) said it is "essential" that Democrats win back the state House of Representatives in November. Part of this decision would also affect the balance in the state Supreme Court. Three of Gov. John Engler's appointees are retir- ing, leaving vacancies on the state's highest court. Democrats have chosen three candidates that they would like to see fill those positions, including Mari- etta Robertson, Carl Marlinga and Judge Edward Thomas. At a time when Republicans are trying to undo the damage that was done to the party when Arizona Sen. John McCain and Texas Gov. George W. Bush tore into each other, Democrats said that they do not feel that former New Jersey senator Bill Bradley's campaign had the same effect on Democrats. "I don't think there is really a great healing that has to take place," U.S. Rep. Dale Kildee (D-Flint) said. "Primaries actually helped Al Gore," Kildee said adding that "Primaries have really damaged and wounded George Bush." ASA Continued from Page 1A rate from one another. The women teased men who tried to court them - turning them down one after the other until the men impressed them with a suggestive dance. Bediako said the event was a good opportunity not only for students to learn about African culture but for American-born Africans as well. "I think it made me want to learn -- Monday, March 13, 2000 - 7A more about my culture," Bediako sail "I learned about other different Africam countries too... I learned about mycut ture and theirs' Bediako said African Nights had been a part of ASA's annual agenda since its founding in 1996. Fifty st- dents have been working on the event since the fall and began rehearsals in early January. In addition to University students, Bediako said the group has worked hard to invite professors and community members to the event. T Over 5.5 minion womein North America suffer frm endometriosis.
