While to some, the Wolverines' poor start might be cause for alarm. But Michigan coach Geoff Zahn isn't too concerned. Last spring, the Wolverines started the season 4-5 before going on to place fourth in the conference and win the Big Ten Tournament. But being that it's months before the Big Ten Tournament, right now the Wolverines' main focus is to find the lineup with the best defense. And what's surprising is that most of that power is coming from the lower end of the stick - as in the fresh- men. "I like the freshmen," Zahn said. "In particular (Brock) Koman and (Jordan) Cantalamessa." Two years ago, while Zahn was recruiting sophomore pitcher Bobby Wood in Colorado, he put stars by two names on that team's lineup: Koman's and Cantalamessa's. "The more I followed them, the more I liked them," Zahn said. "It worked out that we were able to get those two." Third baseman Koman and utility player Cantalamessa, the duo from Colorado, go way back. Koman grew up about an hour away from Cantalamessa and Wood. Cantalamessa and Wood played against each other in little league and then joined forces at the Cherry Creek High School. The two "picked. up" Koman to play on their team in Englewood and since then, they have been pretty close. The two freshmen both recorded their first career hits in their first career starts last week in Florida, and they share the team lead with three multiple-hit games. Koman is the only Wolverine to record four hits in a game after blowing Xavier's pitching staff out of the water, going 4-for-4 on the day. Koman leads Michigan with his .358 batting average and 12 hits - the only Wolverine to reach double digits in the hit column. He is one of only three Wolverines to start in all nine games - six at third base and three as designated hitter. "I'd like to be playing third," Koman said. "I take my defense very seriously and I want to be the best defensive player that I can." Cantalamesssa leads Michigan with four doubles and a .276 average. The freshman didn't start in game one against Jacksonville, but has started every game since - three at second base, two at designated hitter and three in left field. "I'll play anywhere as long as I can get in the game," Cantalamessa said. The Colorado freshmen epitomize what this year's team appears to be about - youth. Although it isn't set just yet, the probable line up for South Carolina includes Koman at third, Cantalamessa in left, freshman Jordan French at first base and freshmen Blake Rutkowski and Gino Lollio in center and right field respectively. Starting five freshmen in the line- up may be a laughing matter to opponents, but there really isn't any- thing funny about it. The freshmen are hungry to play and ready to dig their spikes into the dirt. "There's only so much we can do," Cantalamessa said. "If we just go out and give it our all, things are going to happen, and we'll beat teams. We have the talent, we just have to go out and play." DANA LINNANE/Dai9 With all the young talent starting on the Michigan baseball team this season pitcher Bryan Cranson (above) will be asked to provide some senior leadership.
