Shakespeare sets
Big Ten record
Michigan swimming senior
Shannon Shakespeare broke her own
Big Ten record in the 200-yard
Individual Medley at the Big Ten
Championships yesterday - twice.
In the preliminaries, Shakespeare
had a time of 1:58.60, finishing four
seconds ahead of the competition.
Later, she finished first in the finals
for the fourth straight year, again set-
ting a new standard with 1:5-/.76.
The Wolverines two other first
place finishes were the 400 medley
relay and 200 freestyle relay.
After the first day of competition,
Michigan is in second place behind
defending champion Minnesota in the
hiree day event.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The
niversity of Minnesota said Thursday
t had not received word from suspend-
ed center Joel Przybilla about whether
he plans to return to the basketball
team.
But the 7-footer's father. Doug
Przybilla, said his son will not return to
the team this season and plans to enter
the NBA draft in June.
"~To be honest with you, my wife
and I would have preferred he stay
here (Minnesota)," Doug Przybilla
sold the Star Tribune on Thursday. "But
it came to a point where he had basi-
callv had it."
The Saint Paul Pioneer Press report-
ed that Przvbilla will not return to the
team this season and plans to enter the
NBA draft in June.
The newspaper said Przybilla's par-
ents have begun meeting with prospec-
tive agents for the 7-foot center, a pro-
aercted lottery pick in the draft. The
~ prcited two sources close to the
center but did not name them.
Coach Dan Monson suspended
Przybilla indefinitely Tuesday for what
he characterized as the player's lack of
commitment to academics. By NCAA
academic standards, Przybilla' would
still be eligible to play.
Neither Monson nor Przvbilla could
be reached for comment Thursday. At
a news, conference before practice
ednesday, Monson said he had noth-
ing new to report on his center, who
wasn't at practice.

The Michigan defense will be on
the lookout for senior forward Roger
Trudeau who is leading the Wildcats
to an average of 3.5. goals per game.
"To win on the road you have to
play well defensively," Berenson
said. "You need good goalkeeping
and you need to make your chances
count. If those three things happen
they'll have a good weekend."
And a good weekend for Michigan
could lead to a good shot at the
CCHA regular season title and an
automatic berth to the NCAA tour-
n ament.
But Northern isn't going to give
up fighting for that top spot so easi-
ly. Last weekend Michigan State
swept Northern in East Lansing to
claim second place in the confer-
ence, and the Spartans rest only four
points behind the Wolverines.
The Wildcats, still on the heels of
both teams, will be looking to
avenge the sweep now that they have
returned home. Either way, the
Wolverines are not home free. The
Spartans are next on the docket for
league-leading Michigan.
"if we sweep them up there we
have a pretty good chance of win-
ning the whole thing," junior winger
Josh Langfeld said.
"We definitely know the implica-

Michigan and Michigan State - two

for the regular-season CCHA title.
The top team earns an automnatic bid
to the NGA Tournament. Here's a
look at the race:

Back in 1984, the year Detroit hero
Kirk (Gibson hit the famous homer off
Goosc Gossage to win the Tigers their
last World Series, a 24 year-old named
Bitsy Ritt - with only two years expe-
rience as an assistant coach - came in
with the challenge of turning the
Michigan women's varsity tennis pro-
gram around.'

the Year honors and four NCAA tourna-

now' Ritt said. "Whether it's win num-
ber one or number 200, 1 just want to
beat Kentucky:'
This monumental victory will defi-
nitely be no easy task with the national-
ly ranked Wildcats coming into Ann
Arbor fresh off a win over No. 27 North
Carolina.
Although losing their top three sin-
gles players, an All-American and their
No. I doubles team from last year,
Kentucky coach Mark Guilbeau doesn't
think the Wildcats will be in trouble.
"We're maybe a better team than we
were at the end of last year.
"Although we lack in experience, our
skill level has actually improved and so
has our intensity"
The Wolverines (4-0) have matched
their win total from last year - and it's
