Many financial analysts believe the NASDAQ companies will continue to have strong corporate earnings even if the Federal Reserve decides to raise interest rates, for the fifth time this year, at their March meeting. The blue-chip stocks, which are represented in the DJIA, will have a harder time maintaing attractive growth in their companies because they are more credit-sensitive. This philosophy accounted or the Dow's 538 point loss last week and seems to be starting again more inflationary news was released. There was stronger than expected data concerning housing starts in January, coupled with crude oil futures above $30 for the first time since Persian Gulf War in Janurary 1991, which had investors rattled in yesterday's session. WHAT IS THE Dow JONES INDUSTRIAL AVERAGE? The DJIA represents 30 stocks traded on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and NASDAQ maket. These stocks are all major factors in their respective industries and are widely held by individuals and institutional investors. Many financial advisers think of it as a good indicator in telling whether the overall "market" is doing well or poorly. WHAT IS THE NASDAQ COMPOSITE? The NASDAQ is the fastest growing stock market in the U.S. due to it being a screen-based stock market, compared to a trading floor market like the NYSE. It also has almost all of the technological stocks available for trading, which have proven to be a very volatile, but profitable, industry the last couple of years. WHAT IS THE S&P 500? The S&P 500 is a marketvalue weighted index composed of 400 indus- trial stocks, 20 transportation, 40 financial, and 40 utility. It is a far broader measure than the DJIA because it takes into account 500 different stocks traded on the two main exchanges (NYSE and NASDAQ-AMEX) compared to the DJIA's 30 stocks it reports. - Compiled by Daily Staff Reporter Kevin Afagnuson from wire reports. MICHIGAMUA Continued from Page IA under Michigamua control, but Delgado said the organization would be open to allowing a monitoring process to insure the carrying out of the agreement. Michigamua would agree to continue to carry out the process of removing all Native American cultural materials, including the removal of the "Great Scalper Yost" plaque, the "Happy Hunt- ing Grounds" plaque and a glass encasement containing tomahawk pins, which Delgado said were the only Native American references existing on the premises when the Students of Color Coalition took over the space Feb. 6. SCC spokesman Joe Reilly said Michigamua's proposal for the destiny of their tower office does not comply with SCC's demands. "We want this place to be gutted out and redefined but not under Michiga- mua's terms. We don't want their orga- nization to dictate what goes on in that space any longer. They've done that for 70 years, and that has resulted in a lot of destruction to the University community." This proposal "showcases more about why they shouldn't be making that decision," Reilly said. Michigamua members would agree to stay off the premises until an advi- sory committee, which would make a recommendation to the University on the long-term assignment of the space, convenes. Delgado said Michigamua believes it should keep the space, but the orga- nization is willing to hear the sugges- tions of the advisory body. Reilly said he would be willing to meet with the administration and would not force Michigamua members to leave but wouldn't welcome them either. "We've been ready to talk to the administration for I I days." "To us, Michigamua is not a valid party in this. For I1 years, they have misused the truth in their favor. We're not willing to be lied to anymore." Delgado said Michigamua believes the resolution to issues at hand should involve members of the Native Ameri- can community who are "the most hurt," rather than strictly the occupants in the tower. The proposal asks for the immediate vacation of Michigamua's room by the SCC upon signing the agreement. Michigamua members said, "It is Michigamua's position that it has a valid property interest in the tower" but that the group will continue to serve the University and "thrive on its core values" if the fate of the tower space does not include Michigamua. HENTHORN Continued from Page 1A Henthorn was an agent. Henthorn denied that the connection to a sports agency related sponsorship has anything to do with Crawford, and does not in any way show that he wants to get involved with an agency for bas- ketball players. "It no longer falls under our corporate umbrella," Henthom told the Post-Intellengencer. The new developments involving the relationship between Henthorn and Crawford rose red flags for Michigan, which reopened its investigation. The NCAA already suspended Crawford for six games for violating an amateurism bylaw that entailed the freshman guard accepting preferential benefits during his high school years. Among the new details the NCAA and Michigan are looking into include Henthorn's admittance to asking his former administrative assistant Darci- enne LeRoue to co-sign loans to buy Crawford a 1985 Blazer and gold jew- elry. Henthorn also created a scholar- ship foundaion the Academic Assistance Fund, and listed Crawford as a beneficiary, and drafted an contractur- al agreement asking Crawford to make appearances for the foundation. The agreement, accessed by the Post- Intellegencer, appears to be unsigned. Neither Henthorn nor Crawford would comment as to whether a signed agreement was reached. Michigan coach Brian Ellerbe said he cannot comment on investigation specifics, deflecting those questions to University counsel Marvin Krislov, who could not be reached for comment. Ellerbe couldn't recall meeting Hen- thorn, but did spring up some light as to team's recruiting of Crawford. "You have to go out and recruit not just (the player), but the 20 to 25 people who influence their decisions."
