Valentine's Day is the one day when
those in love should be together. Many
university students are in relationships
with people in other states. For those
couples that are separated by distance,
the web can help you show your loved
one how you feel.
Most long-distance relationships
iolve many pricey phone calls. The
wxeb can help you talk to each other on
the cheap, provided you have a micro-
phone and speakers. Microsoft's
NetMeeting allows users to talk or chat
with anyone over the web, as long as
they have they are also running the soft-
ware. NetMeeting is preinstalled on
most computers with Windows 95 and
higher, so chances are you can make
contact. There are over 4 million people
that actively use NetMeeting. That
many people can't be wrong - or can
DailPad.con is a website that lets
you do one better. With DailPad.com,
you can make calls to any number in the
country for free. That's right, any num-
ber in the country, free of charge. You're
speaking from your computer, your
friend is speaking on the phone. No
proprietary software is needed, so the
system works pretty much as well on a
Mac as it does on a PC. The website
already boasts a membership of 2 mil-
Lacking a sound card? You can still
communicate with your loved one in
real time. Chat rooms are a mainstay of
the net. The sites and methods for this
type of communication are as varied as
they are plentiful. For a bit more priva-
cy, instant messaging is the way. Most
people online have a subscription to at
least one instant messaging system.
AOL's Instant Messenger and ICQ are
the most widely used systems, each
with memberships of over 15 million.
The Yahoo and MSN messengers have
been making major headway in the
arena so they may soon be as common
as AOL's products.
Love letters have always been a staple
of Valentine's Day. Unfortunately, most
of us lack the eloquence necessary to
convey our emotions into writing -
many a lover has agonized over creating
the perfect poem indicative of their
devotion to that special someone. Do
not fear, though: The net can be your
aide. With a few clicks, even the most
befuddled lover can find literary works
to duplicate in a dedication to his love.
Any thing from Bartlett's Famous
Quotations to Shakespeare's sonnets
can be found online. The only thing eas-
ier would be to not have to copy down
the poem yourself -- and the net can
assist in that capacity as well.
The proximity of Valentine's Day has
inspired a plethora of sites to save you
the trouble of having to come up with
your own material. Websites such as
Regards.com and even
MichiganDaily.com have collections of
online Valentine's Day cards available
for your use. Even a cursory glance at
these sites should help you find a card
that expresses your personal brand of
love and adoration.
With the money you've saved on
communicating with your love, you
might be able to afford to send a gift.
All standard Valentine's Day gifts are
available on the web. Flowers from
1800flowers.com or FTD.com, choco-
lates from Godiva.com, gadgets from
RadioShack.com or Sharperlmage.com
or even a perfume from
BeautyScene.com are just a few of the
items one could purchase online. And
of course, nothing says I love you quite
