Murder ballads, traditional narrative verses detailing murder. have long been the realm of folk artists, but have little impact on the mainstream music industrv. Cave recorded an entire album of these songs, both traditional and original, and it went on to become the man's best selling record and one of his most critically acclaimed. By taking the contrast between sound and substance to its ultimate level, Cave created something both humorous and disquieting, and on the whole, quite enjoyable to listen to. Even at its most disturbing, Nick Cave somehow manages to make murder sound beautiful. "Where the Wild Roses Grow," featuring the voice of Australian soap star Kylie Minogue, is a perfect example, com- posed as a sonorous duet detailing the thoughts of a couple as the man blud- geons the woman with a rock. The tra- ditional "Henry Lee," a perfectly matched duet with PJ Harvey, is the opposite, the tale of a man stabbed by his girlfriend. Though Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds will never realize a platinum record, quality has for them always taken precedence over popularity. "Murder Ballads" is typical of Cave's pursuit of thought-provoking perfec- tion, and comes closer than any num- berone record on the charts since. RLM a Next year about this time, look for Russell Crowe ("Insider", the upcoming "Gladiator") to star with Claire Danes in "Plum Flora," a drama set in the Great Depression. Crowe will play a circus freak, and Danes is his love interest. Also look out for a "Goodfellas" sequel, which will center on the kids of the char- acter played by Ray Liotta. No word yet on whether or not the kids stab school- mates with cravons and safety scissors. 0 "Simpsons" fans rejoiced around the world as Richard Gere named his first-born Homer. Actually, his full name is Homer James Jigme Gere. Once, at an Irish bar, I asked a girl to "Jigme," and I got slapped in the face. I hope little Homer never shares the same fate by reciting his strangely embarrassing name aloud. - First Letterman with his heart surgery, and now this. Are people in Hollywood actually mortal'? Steven Spielberg is recovering from the com- plete removal of one kidney. Doctor's said they found an unspecified "prob- lem" in the kidney, and decided to remove it. Sure, when I have a stomach ache, yoink! Out it comes! Seriously, the doctor's reluctance to disclose details led many to think it was cancer or perhaps an embarrassingly huge kidney stone. A Pam Grier is set to star in "Bones," a story about a ghost that rises from the grave to avenge his death. Grier is the clairvoyant who was the ghost's boyfriend. And who plays the undead? None other than Snoop Dogg. Snoop Doggy Dogg? Couldn't Grier ("Jackie Brown") do any better? Please, musi- cians, no more acting! Need I remind the world of "Cool as Ice?" You don't see Julia Roberts or Tom Cruise lining up to cut a record. Speaking of Tom Cruise, it has been confirmed that he pulled down S70 million for making 1995's "Mission: Impossible." I thought he made only S20 million, but now I'm jealous. In other mega-buck news, the daughter of Boris Karloff is suing Universal Studios for S10 million, claim- ing sufficient royalties have not been paid. Boris, who made a name for him- self shambling around as Frankenstein and The Mummy, rose from his grave, crashed through his daughter's bedroom window and told her to get a job. TELEViSoN e The idiot box will attempt to fur- ther solidify its nickname with the ascen- dance of the "Lone Gunmen." That's' right, Mulder and Scully's nerdy, yet paranoid trio of friends are probably going to have their own series. Think "X- Files" without any guns or attractive female leads. Oh, fun. 0 In an announcement that made many spit out their drinks in surprise, then after a moment. vomit into their now empty cups, James "Scottv" Doohan, age 80, impregnated a woman. (Not actu- ally just any woman. It's his wife Wende). I am not the only one skeptical of this item's validity, however, as the child is expected on April 1. "I'm givin' it all I got, Captain!" All those transporter rays must have boosted his fertility. - The only Aaron Spelling show Pat Robertson ever watched without hurling was threatened when "Seventh Heaven" cast member Jessica Biel took to drastic measures to get out of her contract. Biel is tired of playing goody-goody oldest daughter and varsity basketball star Mary Camden. So she posed for a series of soft-core, very occasionally clothed pictures in the men's magazine Gear in hopes of getting fired. Biel lamented to Gear that the role's wholesomeness lim- ited her ability to be considered for film roles. Spelling was not amused, and expressed determination to squeeze every drop to which he is contractually entitled out of Ms. Biel. Musec r The four Swedish rump-shaking legends known as ABBA have turned down a SI billion offer to reunite and tour the world. The band did not disclose the name of the financial institution which so badly wanted middle-aged Swedes to record for the first time since 1979. Asked to comment on his band- mates' stupefying decision, Bjorn Ulvaeus said, "We never have reunited ... I think there's a message in that." - Compiled by David Victor and JeffDruchniakfromE/Online, Mi: Showbiz (wiwimrshowhiz.coi), Daily Radar (twwdailvrada:com) and Gearo..
