return of
Gonzalez
Ally Charles Chen
Daily Staff Reporter
Throughout the last two months, many different
perspectives concerning whether 6-year-old Elian
Gonzalez should be returned to his father in Cuba
have been portrayed in media reports.
On Friday, Felix Wilson presented his perspec-
tive as the First Secretary of the Cuban Interest
Section to more than 50 people in the Michigan
Union Ballroom. Wilson said the boy should not
be granted citizenship in the United States and
instead returned to his father in Cuba.
"Eljan is being kidnapped in the United States,"
Wilson said. "He was brought here without know-
ing where he was."
Gonzalez arrived in the United States nearly
two months ago after he and his mother attempted
to sail to Florida illegally by boat from Cuba.
Although his mother drowned when their boat
capsized, Gonzalez was rescued by the Coast
Guard in the Atlantic Ocean, just south of Miami.
Since then he has been placed in the custody of
distant relatives in Miami.
Wilson's speech focused primarily on the issue
of Gonzalez's health and his beliefs that the boy is
being used for other Cuban's personal gain.
"We are not talking politics," Wilson explained.
"People who are caring for Elian now won't care
for him in two, three, even four months."

First Secretary of the Cuban Interest Section Felix Wilson spoke to a crowd of more than 50 people at the

Much of his argument regarding family values
also centered on the position of the boy's father,
who lives in Cuba.
"His father doesn't need to come to the United
States. His son was kidnapped from him and
should be returned to him as soon as possible,"
Wilson said.
After Wilson's speech, he fielded questions
from audience members for more than an hour. As
audience members presented their opinions on the
case, Ignacio Meneses, who serves as coordinator
of the Justice for Cuba Coalition, said he sympa-
thizes with Gonzalez's father.
"You cannot lose perspective of the fundamental
issues of the Elian Gonzalez case, in that he was
kidnapped. You cannot tell me that someone can

kidnap my child, then two months later tell me
that you have rights equal to mine," Meneses said.
While some feel that Gonzalez should be
returned to his father in Cuba, others had-a differ-
ent view.
"The (Immigration and Naturalization Ser-
vices) policy shouldn't be reversed since he did
step on American soil. He risked his life to be
here," Rackham first-year student Holly Stock-
dale said.
The International Action Center and the Peace and
Justice Commission of Michigan Student Assembly
sponsored Friday's presentation.

bacterial meningitis

EAST LANSING (AP) - A Michi-
gan State University student was being
treated yesterday for bacterial menin-
gitis, a potentially deadly disease, uni-
versity officials said.
The name of the student and other
details were being withheld at the
request of the family, university
spokesman Terry Denbow said.
Denbow said the doctor is cau-
tiously optimistic" the student,
who lives off campus, will fully

recover.
The school on Saturday and yester-
day contacted students who had come
into contact with the student.
Meningitis is an inflammation of the
lining around the spinal cord and
brain.
It is caused by a bacteria which is
spread through close contact such as
kissing, sharing eating utensils or hav-
ing direct contact with secretions from
the throat orinose.

CRAWFORD
Continued from Page IA
said. "It was unbelievable (when he
heard of the suspension). I, don't see
why I should be sitting out. To the
NCAA it wasn't unfair, but to me it
was really unfair. . didn't do any-
thing wrong. This was a stability sit-
uation."
The suspension stems from Craw-
ford's involvement with Henthorn,
chairman of a telecommunications com-
pany in Seattle.
Crawford's mother asked Henthorn
about three years ago to assume
guardianship of Crawford.
Henthorn furnished Crawford with a
room, food, car and spending money.
Crawford said that he lived with Hen-
thorn for awhile, but would not define
the length of time.
But no legal transaction of guardian-
ship took place, and the NCAA ruled
that Crawford's relationship with Hen-
thorn broke the NCAA amateurism
bylaw.
"He was just a mentor and a family
friend. I've known him for awhile, and I
lived with him for awhile. He's a real
nice guy, and when I was having prob-
lems he helped me out -- and not just
financially. I don't know where I would
be (without him) - working on the
streets probably."
Crawford's suspension comes in a
period where the NCAA has utilized its
iron fist at any sign of wrongdoing. This
weekend players from the University of
Connecticut, Seton Hall University, and
St. Johns' University were ruled ineligi-
ble.
"If they look into other people, there
may be instances," Crawford said.
"They know I didn't do anything
wrong."
Crawford was ruled ineligible as a
result of an internal investigation by the
University Athletic Department of the
possible violation.
The department self reported its
findings to the NCAA on Jan. 24.
The NCAA responded Jan. 28 ask-
ing Michigan to rule Crawford ineli-
gible until it made a final decision
on the matter.
The NCAA announced the decision
to suspend Crawford late Friday after-
noon.
Crawford will return for a Feb. 24
matchup against Purdue University.
Both Crawford and Ellerbe would not
comment on whether University offi-
cials knew about the guardianship dur-
ing the recruiting process.
Education Prof. Percy Bates, a
faculty representative on the Board
in Control of Intercollegiate Athlet-
ics said after the Michigan State
game that the University had no
prior knowledge of the matter until

late December when Crawford tried
to register his car, in Henthorn's
name, with the Athletic Department.
Crawford said he did not know.
exactly when he learned that his
guardianship may be an NCAA vio-
lation, but did say he did not know
about it before he signed his letterof
intent.
Meanwhile, the Wolverines sludge
without their leading scorer, in the madst
of a four-game losing streak. Michigan
began the season 12-3.
Crawford doesn't blame himself for
the suspension and says his teammates
and fans don't either.
"It wasn't my fault so I don't feel
responsible," Crawford said. "I think
we'll still make the tournament. Just
be there for them and be supportive.
They've supported me. They tell me
to just keep my head up. The whole
administration here, the fans, every-
body's been really supportive."
Crawford has dealt with numerous
off-court problems in the past few
months.
First, he had to deal with a punish-
ment for successive flare-ups at practice
in January. Ellerbe benched Crawford
for more than 14 minutes of the first
half against Illinois.
Crawford also has endured numerous
backlashes through the media in the past
few weeks, beginning with speculation
he was homesick and wanted to transfer
to the University of Washington near his
Seattle-area home.
Michigan assistant coach Lorenzo
Neely's role within the program was
reduced after a physical altercation with
Crawford. Neely has yet to comment pn
the incident.
Crawford then dealt with the NCAA
violation and successive suspension.
Before he came to the University,
Crawford filed for the NBA.
ESPN reported last week that Craw-
ford sent the draft paperwork to the
NBA last May but it got to the league
office one day late. If the letter made it
in time, the NBA would have entered
Crawford in the draft and he would be
ineligible to play in college - even if he
changed his mind at a later date.
Crawford was apparently unaware of
the rule.
"You get confused," Crawford said in
his first public comments on filing for
the draft. "It wasn't much of a thought,
You make mistakes. I'm here. I didn't
know what I was doing."
Michigan coaches have told Craw-
ford to come back after his suspension
and then evaluate his options - includ-
ing whether he will stay at Michigan or
try his luck in the NBA.
"They told me to just hang in there'
Crawford said.
