12 - The Michigan Daily - Wednesday, February 2, 2000 Quote of the game "I think that's an understatement." - Michigan coach Brian Ellerbe when asked by a reporter whether leading scorer Jamal Crawfords absence from last night's game deprived the Wolverines of a reasonable chance to win. Michigan State 'j Michigan 82 62 Player of the game Michigan State forward Monis Peterson Peterson scored 32 points on i1-of-15 shooting including 5-of-8 fiom 3-point range. The All-Big Ten senior, who hails fion Flint, also grabbed 10 rebounds for his fourth double- double of the season Sunday, Feb. 6 Michigan vs Ohio State, Cris/er Arena, 1p.m. (CBS) After last nights loss, Michigan saw its losing streak extended to three dames. And the going only gets tougher, Sunday, when the Wolverines face the Big Ten's other dynamite guard duo - Buckeyes Scoonie Penn and Michael Redd. Ohio State has only lost one Big Ten game, thus far. Wednesday, Feb. 9 Michigan at Illinois, Assembly Hall (Champaign), 7 p.m. (ESPN) When they faced off Jan. 16 in Ann Arbor, it took Michigan an overtime period to beat the Fighting llini - a team that couldn't hold a candle to Michigan State in a 25-point loss this past Sunday U I VERS I TY OF MICG I Z A L HEALTH 1D' "x-Rats " Dental Exaination FR E E ralCancer Screening Examinatlon When: Saturday, February 05,2000 9:00 AM1012:00 Noon Where:Michigan SchooldflDendstry,1st Floor 1011 N. If Michigan State's media director hadn't clued me in, I might never have noticed. Two tables away, nonchalantly as could be, sat No. 8 Michigan State's head coach Tom Izzo, chatting casually with reporters. I could not help but crack a smile, and I pulled up a chair. The conversation between Izzo and the media lasted about an hour, and the charismatic coach was sure to throw in a few good-natured jabs about reporters while fielding their queries. The whole thing was so open - nobody hiding behind microphones or denials or manufactured "no comments. Sure, State has had a few problems within the program over the past two seasons - but it hasn't had a noticeable effect on the Spartans' demeanor off the court. The same is not true in Ann Arbor. Some might say Ellerbe inherited a mess. But what he truly inherited was an atmosphere. Michigan is one of the biggest programs in the nation, successful or not. Marketing gurus claim it is tops in the field. And it did not get there without effort. Every little off-the- court factor that has made Michigan the perpetual No. I has also contributed to its lock-and-key attitude and endless scruti- ny by the media. It should come as little surprise that, while reporters in East Lansing can joke with the Big Ten Coach of the Year over cookies, the doors to Crisler Arena are locked to outsiders. It shouldn't be a shock that nobody was told until two minutes into the game last night that Jamal Crawford has been ineligi- ble since last Friday. All Brian Ellerbe wants to do is coach basketball. And ail I want to do is write basketball. But this is Michigan, and as we both have learned, that's not a luxury anyone here can have. - David Den Herder can be reached at dden'z~uniich.edu FG FT REB MIN M-A M-A O-T A F PTS Anagonye 17 1-1 0-0 1-1 03 2 Peterson 28 11-15 5-8 4-10 2 1 32 Hutson 30 4-9 2-3 5-10 4 3 10 Cleaves 29 5-9 6-8 0-2 6 3 19 Bell 28 1-5 4-4 1-4 2 3 7 Smith 2 0-0 0-2 0-0 0 0 0 Thomas 11 1-1 0- 0-3 02 2 Chappell 11 0-2 0-0 )0-0 000: Richardson 12 1-3 00 1-2 1 2 2 Granger -22 3-8 0-0 1-3 1 4 8 Ballinger 10 0-0 0.0 0-2 0 3 0 Tot*l 200 27-53 17-25 13-37 16 24 82, FG%- .509FT% .680 3-point FG: 11-22, 500 (Peterson 5-8, Cleaves 3-5, Granger 2-5, Bel 1-3, Richardson 0- 1).
