10 - The Michigan Daily - Tuesday, February 1, 2000 AN HISTORIC SCRIPT The rivalry's history transcends the collective memor of current students on bot sides. The Daily revisits some of the best and worst. 1920s Jan. 6, 1922 After battling to a 23-23 tie at the end of regulation, Michi- gan opened the overtime with tour points, and then held on to the lead over Michigan Agricul- tural College, 27-26. 1940s Jan. 4, 1943 Michigan pushed its record to a perfect 5-0 with a hard- fought 29-26 win over Michi- gan State at Jenison Field House in East Lansing. In a game that will not be remem- ered for its' aesthetic charm, Michigan shot just 25 per- cent (10-40) from the field, yet was able to triumph, largely thanks to Michigan State's even more horrid 21 percent "marksmanship." Dec. 3, 1949 Michigan kicked off its season with a 52-49 win over Mich an State, erasing a 36- 24 de cit early in the second half. The Wolverines first lead came with eight minutes to go. Mack Suprunowicz's bucket with a minute left gave Michigan a 51-46 lead, solidifying its victory. 1950s Mar. 5, 1956 In his final game at Michi- gan, Tom Jorgensen scored 24 points on a bad leg, but still could not lift the Wolverines to victory as Julius McCoy score his 20th point with 55 seconds left. Pete Tillotson's basket at the buzzer made the final score 76-75. Jan. 7, 1957 A late surge was not enough to save Michigan State, as Michigan barely held off the Spartans, 70-69, at Jenison Field House. Michi- gan forward George Lee led all scorers with 20 points in a game which concluded with a wild scramble for the ball under Michigan's basket. 1960s Jan. 26, 1965 Cazzie Russell, believed at the time by Michigan fans to be god's gift to man, scored 40 points for Michigan to help overcome a 10-point halftime deficit and win in overtime 103-98 in East Lansing. 1970s Jan. 25, 1979 With the score knotted at 48 apiece, Michigan State's Magic Johnson was called for his only personal foul of the game as Keith Smith's desper- ation shot missed. With no time left, Smith hit his first free throw to win 49-48 in front of the home crowd. Michigan State coach Jud Heathcote claimed to dis- agree with the foul called. "If someone sees the replay I think they'll see...well... Heathcote stopped himself in mid sentence. 1 980s Feb. 5, 1981 Michigan's Marty Bodnar, now ticket office manager, hit a lay-up with two seconds left, giving the Wolverines a 79-7 overtime win in East Lansing. After Michigan's eight-point lead with 1:23 left in regulation disanpeared, Michigan vs. ichigan State, isler Arena A TWISTED PLOT The rival isn't just decided on the or. -court events have had an impact on both teams in recent years. 0 W hile driving then- recruit Mateen Cleaves back from a party in Detroit - itself a minor NCAA violation for exceed- ing the designated amoutnt of miles for taking a recruit off campus during a visit - Maurice Taylor rolled over a Ford Explorer on M-14 near Ford Road. Questions about the owner- ship of the vehicle and how Robert Traylor acquired it began to surface, Michigan hired a law firm to conduct its own inquiry, and the NCAA got involved. The result was a depleted Michigan program, despite minimal sanctions, as the Wolverines are still trying to pick up the pieces and build their program back to this day. 9' 12 Mateen Cleaves Averaging just 8.3 points per game, but serv- ing as the Spartans' all- important floor leader, dishing out 7.3 assists per contest. 14 Charlie Bell Netting 12.4 points per game, including a 20- point performance this past Sunday against Illi- nois. Averages five boards and three assists. SMALL FORWARD k ASW POINT GUARD Gaines is the right man to stick close to Cleaves, the Spartans' floor leader. Gaines will need to cut off Cleaves' passing lanes in order to limit his effectiveness. Michigan's biggest concern is certainly not the shooting of Cleaves, but Gaines willineed to play tight in order to disrupt Cleaves' flow on offense. Gaines, meanwhile, will face his biggest test of the season on the offensive end. Already well-known for making the shots he takes, Gaines will need to continue to employ sound shot selection. His decision-making on the fast break must be near impeccable. SHOOTING GUARD Crawford is suspect defensively, and will most likely be outmuscled by the stronger Bell, a junior. Bell is a reliable outside shooter, so Crawford faces one of the tougher matchups in trying to play Bell both outside and inside. On offense, Crawford willneed to shoot better than his typical 7-for-20 from the field. He must be able to get his 20 points without taking a large majority of Michigan's shots. Brian Ellerbe will have a lot more tolerance for Crawford's off-balance shooting if the fresh- man can nail a few early. : ro 4f 2 Kevmi Gaines Shooting 46 percent, while averaging 12.4 points per game, Gaines is a calming influence with the ball for Michiga. Jamal rwford His 33 3-pointers lead the Wolverines, as the freshman averages 16.6 points per game, tops on the team. In October of 1997, upon conclusion of an internal investigation, Tom Goss fired Steve Fisher - the coach who took Bill Frieder's team in 1989 and led them to the national championship. At the time, many felt Fisher was unfairly made the casual- ty of an NCAA investigation which was beyond his con- trol. But as the details slowly leaked out - Ed Martin's presence during in-home recruiting visits, his receiving of complimentary tickets to home games - it became evident that Goss made the call he needed to make. After a brief stint as an assis- tant with the Sacramento Kings, Fisher became the head coach at San Diego State. 25 34 Andre Hutson LaVell Blanchard This is a matchup that Michigan must win. Hutson is bruised and beat- up at moment, having just had a , ,,-- Al Anagonye CENTER 25 Josh Asselin Anagonye is the weak link in Michigan State's offensive chain. This will be his fourth start in a row, serving as a physical box-out guy who tries to distract the opponent's big man. He is limited offensively, and shouldn't pose too much of a problem in that regard. But if he can outhustle Asselin to rebounds, Michigan doesn't have a chance. In the offensive post, Asselin needs to be wary of dribbling near the basket - the Spartans' guards are too quick and they will sneak in and steal the ball. Asselin must establish solid position down low with- out using the dribble, and convert any baby hooks he can. POWER FORWARD 42 Morris Peterson 34 Brandon Smith Smith has started just one game this season, and he only started against Illi- nois because Crawford was disciplined. He shcud er the nod toniht,. lest M ichigan State's Mateen Cleaves has had more than his fair share of run-ins with the law, but his latest episode was possibly his greatest. Cleaves and former teammate Antonio Smith were accused of stealing a 40-ounce bottle of beer from an East Lansing 7-Eleven. Prosecutor Stuart Dunnings III dropped the charges e~ rr _ . _ f lon. c nitIa -. I
