"We do not have evidence that the Pakistani government was in any way involved in that hijacking,' Clinton told a White House news con- ference. Nevertheless, the administration has called on Pakistan to break its ties to Harkat State Department spokesperson James Rubin said a U.S. delegation that visited Islamabad last week expressed Washington's concern about Pakistan's "general support" for several Kashmiri groups, including larkat Moujahedeen. Nevertheless, Rubin and White House spokesper- son Joe Lockhart read identical statements saying the administration has "no evidence that the govern- ment of Pakistan had foreknowledge of, supported regime, at least not unless additional damag- ing information comes to light. One passenger was killed during the weeklong drama that began Dec. 24. The Harkat Moujahedeen group, under a previous name, Harkat Ansar, has been on the State Department's list of terrorist organiza- tions since 1997. The government of India accused Pakistan of planning the hijacking but has offered no proof. Although the identity of the hijackers is not known, their link to Harkat Moujahedeen seems clear because they demanded the release of a leader of the group, along with two other militants, in exchange for freeing 155 hostages. "We have been concerned for some time about the fact that agencies of the Pakistani government have provided general support to a number of groups operating in Kashmir, including Harkat Moujahedeen," Rubin said. t.S. takeover of EMI raises concern in Britain One last look i c The Washington Post LONDON -- Elvis was still king, Chuck Berry still had rockin' pneumonia and American pop stars dominated the music business on both sides of the Atlantic. Then, in the spring of 1962. Vcord studio on London's Abbey Road took a r on a catchy little ditty called "Love Me Do." That first Beatles record was probably the most important signing in the long history of EMI Group, the biggest and oldest British record company. The corporate history of EMI - for Electric and Musical Industries Ltd. - dates to the cylindrical gramophone records of the J890s. Its contributions to the industry include the image (later borrowed by RCA) taken from the ting "His Master's Voice," showing a dog i ening at a gramophone. By the early '60s, though, EMI badly needed "Help" to move beyorrd "Monday." Revitalized by the Fab Four, EMI signed up other British acts, including the Rolling Stones, David Bowie, the Spice Girls and Blur. Then it wetglobal, and today it is a major world player, with a roster of regular million-sellers ranging from the Beastie Boys in the United States to the Japanese pop group Dreams Come True. *ow the last British record label will become oneinore title on the long roster of companies clustering around America Online Inc., the Internet giant in the Washington suburb of Dulles, Va. In yet another AOL coup, EMI agreed during the weekend to merge its music business with Warner Music Group, the big American record company whose parent, Time Warner Inc., was just acquired by AOL. The transfer of vet another British corpora- tion to U.S. hands -- just days after Citigroup bought the London investment bank Schroders _- prompted concern here. "U.S. takes over Britain's last major record label" read the front-page headline in Monday's Independent newspaper. There was evidence to support that point of view. The new venture will be called "Warner EM I Music" Its headquarters will be in New York. The American partner is guaranteed a majority of seats on the board, and Warner Music Group Chair Roger Ames will run the show. Both American and British executives respond- ed defensively at a news conference here Monday when asked about a U.S. takeover. "We still have a famous British company," argued Eric Nicoli, chair of EMI Group. He noted that the London Stock Exchange will still trade EMI shares, adding. "We're acutely aware of our roots and traditions." Nicoli winced a few minutes later, though, when Time Warner Chairman Gerald Levin, addressing the same news conference from New York, referred to EMI as "our London arm." Microsoft - WASHINGTON (AP) - Signalhng a potential division within ranks that could complicate settlement talks and the next important phase of the Microsoft trial, some states active in the case believe the Justide Department's plan to break up one of the world's most successful companies may not be the best solution. Although debate continues n secret among the 19 state attorne generals deciding what to recom- mend about Microsoft Corp., there is a risk the government might fail to bring a unified proposal on sanctions to U.S District Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson. He previously told government lawyers bluntly bto agree among themselves before they pre- sent in court any plan for sanctions. "I would not like to have to deal with divergent points of view," Jackson told them in a private meet- ing in November. Illustrating the difficulties in achiev- ing such consensus, Ohio's attorney general indicated she is leaning toward a ban on some of Microsoft's behavior' toward others in the technology indus try rather than a forced restructuring of - the software giant. Calling the dilemma "the most diffi: cult professional decision I ever go" involved with," Ohio Attorney Genrat Betty Montgomery told The Associated Press that a breakup of Microsoft "has never been on my top list." "I have to tell you that my bias is toward a conduct resolution, but again it's too early to be specific,- Montgomery said. "Quite frankly,.I indicated to my staff when we started this lawsuit that I was not looking out for a structural solution as much as a conduct solution" AP PHOO Festival-goers look at a 30-foot long ship which is part of the Up-Helly-Aa celebration in Scotland's Shetland Islands yesterday.
