PAGE 23 By Jeff Phillips Daily Sports Writer There are a number of reasons why Notre Dame exhibited their frustra- tion so flagrantly in their 5-2 loss to Michigan. Whether it was the pressure of upcoming exams or having to make a midweek trip to Ann Arbor, the Irish made no attempt to hide their emo- tions yesterday afternoon. 'I could tell that (Aaron Talarico) was mentally vulnerable and I tried to exploit it," Danny McCain said. Sophomore Ben Cox agreed. "Even in the first set that I could tell that (Andrew Laflin) wasn't into it," Cox said. After dropping the doubles point for the third straight match, Michigan won five of six singles matches - including at the No. 2 position where John Long ended his seven match skid. "It is very easy to win when you are on a big winning streak, but it is much harder if you are on a losing streak," Long said. Long did not make it look very hard as he cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 vic- tory - and it wasn't that close. Long used a powerful serve and an accu- rate forehand to blow past a dejected Matt Daly. As Long continued the onslaught, Daly's shoulders slumped lower and lower. At No. 3 singles, Henry Beam needed three sets to get past Casey Smith - who let he crowd know how he felt. At the end of the match - after he hit a forehand into the middle of the net - Smith threw his racquet across the court and yelled at the line judge. "He thought that I had distracted him after I hit my volley, but there was just nothing he could do about it," Beam said. At No. 4 and No. 5 singles, McCain and Cox used their oppo- nents weaknesses against them. At No. 4, McCain saw that he could take advantage of his oppo- nent's mental game. "My goal was to get inside his Tennis, anyone? Want to get out of the cold weather and still see heated Big Ten competi- tion? Down 4-1, McCain began talking to Talarico and the crowd. After every winner he hit, McCain looked at Talarico and yelled, "Come on!" McCain continued to use this strategy en route to winning the first set in a tiebreaker. He then won the second set by relentlessly breaking down Talarico.
