The Michigan Daily - Tuesday, Apri 20, 1999 - 7 4OLYMPICS zContinued from Page 1 time Olympic jobs. "In a heartbeat, I'd come back and take an Olympics job" said LSA junior Jessica Fisher, a UNSW study abroad student. "I'm trying to get a full-time job here so I will be able to do that." Officials at other local universities said they also are looking out for students who want to work during the Games. "We're taking the break for a number of rea- sons," said Andrew Potter, University of Sydney's media manager. "Some of our students will be competing, some academics are involved with the administrative side of the Games and many of our researchers are involved with issues or work relat- ed to the Games." / "Also, the uni(versity) itself will be used for its conference centers and residence halls" Potter said. The Sydney Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games and the International Olympic Committee are setting up accommodations at local universities for non-athlete guests of the Olympics, Potter said. Olympics competitors, however, will be housed in the Athletes Village, which was designed by a San Francisco-based architecture firm and has been constructed at Sydney Olympic Park. It will be the "world's largest solar-powered community, said a government source. Additionally, the homes of the village will be sold after the Games to permanent residents. In addition to the Athletes Village, Stadium Australia has been erected at Homebush Bay - the site of the Games - with a capacity of 110,000. Through the UNSW study abroad office, several University of Michigan students in Sydney were able to attend a sold-out National Rugby League match at Stadium Australia's debut last month. "It was great to be there as an outsider" said LSA junior Michele McGlinchey, who is studying abroad at New South Wales. "There were so many people screaming at the same time; it reminded me of a Michigan football game." Prior to large-scale environmental landscape improvements in the area, Homebush Bay was a major dumping site for Sydney's household and industrial waste. Enthusiasm for the Sydney Games also can be seen in the availability of hotel accommodations during the Olympic months. "As far as I know, they're all completely booked," Pearson said. The hotel bookings will prompt several cruise ship companies to send at least nine 1,000-room ships into Sydney's harbors during the Games to serve as "floating hotels," Pearson said. Many Sydney residents, however, do not want to deal with the Olympic crowds. "I plan to leave Sydney during the Olympics," said Sydney resident Brooke Gissing, a UNSW student. "We're crowded enough as it is." Gissing said she plans to go overseas with her family for the duration of the 2000 Games. The popularity of the Sydney Olympics is also anticipated to have a major effect on local trans- portation, which has led to the creation of the Olympic Road and Transportation Authority. The other main citywide projects include a new highway and railway connecting Sydney International Airport to the heart of Sydney and the recruitment of 3,300 buses and 4,500 drivers from surrounding cities, Willoughby said. "It'll be the biggest bus recruitment ever in Sydney," Willoughby said. "The biggest we've seen was 900 (buses) for the Pope in 1995." Willoughby said public transportation will be the only means available to arrive at the OlympiCs. Although Australia and its many beaches are well-known for surfing, the favorite pastime wjil not be an official Olympic sport in the 20®0 Games. "A sport must be practiced in 75 countries on four continents to be eligible for the Summer Games," SOCOG Public Information Coordinator Kathleen Watson said, referring to the Olympic charter. Two new sports and two new disciplines will be introduced in 2000 - the triathlon, tae- kwon-doe, trampoline and synchronized diving. The triathlon, which is scheduled to kick-off the 2000 Olympics, will start at the Sydney Opera House, said Amanda Werner, Sydney Opera House media relations officer. Olympic Coordination Authority officials expect 4.5 billion television viewers to watch the opening ceremonies of the 2000 Olympics. 41 SUBLET STARTING MAY 1ST, room for rent, will negotiate, Call Amy 996-5827.
