The Michigan Daily - SportsMonday - April 19, 1999 - 15 Spit-squad no problem for track By Dena Krischer aily Sports Writer They're here. Fourteen members of Michigan's men's track team stayed close to home to compete at the Eastern Michigan Open in Ypsilanti his weekend. They're there. Michigan sent eight athletes more than 3,000 miles away to compete in the elite Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif. They're everywhere. The Wolverines overpowered their position at the Eastern Michigan Open, claiming nine top three finishes. "This was a big break as far as stress goes. It was another chance to com- pete," freshman sprinter Jeremy Schneider said. "I think we're going to surprise a lot of people (at the Penn Relays). I don't want to say anything about winning because it's such a huge meet." *zhneider will be competing next week in the 4x400-meter relay. Schneider and sophomore Ravi Smith claimed the top two places for Michigan in the 400-meter run in Ypsilanti. Three other freshmen continued the success of the younger Wolverines, finishing second in their events Rowingtad By Emily Achenbaum Daily Sports Writer Forty-degree temperatures, rain and wind. It's not exactly the stuff rower's dreams are made of. But while mid- western weather is unpredictable, the Michigan rowing team has proven to be anything but. q For the second consecutive weekend, e Wolverines faced wicked weather and still dominated their competition, this time blowing away Ohio State and Notre Dame last Saturday at the Griggs Reservoir in Columbus. Michigan's first and second varsity eight boats won both of their races, tak- ing the lead just 500 meters into the race. The Wolverines took second in the varsity four race and both novice races. "We did our job and we did it well," *nior Heather Uhring said. "We gave Notre Dame and Ohio State our best possible race" FOOTBALL Continued from Page 12 "Drew Henson is much better now than he was in August 1998;" Carr said. Henson's competition, incumbent *arter Tom Brady, also had his moments Saturday, hooking up with wideout Marcus Knight on deep throws twice. While the offense looked good, the special teams had its share of prob- lems. "When you get that far ahead, it's mentally devastating to the teams behind," Uhring said. "Even if they have the physical power to catch up, they don't think they can do it" In the first NCAA Central Region rankings of the year, the Wolverines were ranked No. '2 behind Virginia. Each varsity boat placed in the top four of its class. Virginia's clinching of the No. I seed in the region guarantees them a spot at nationals. As NCAAs approach, the Wolverines' margin of victory becomes an important statistic. Margins of victory, unlike time, which is subjective to weather condi- tions, is likely to catch the eye of the national championship selection com- mittee. he missed three consecutive field goals from 42 yards. Epstein also had two punts blocked on the afternoon. Michigan had its first three punts blocked, and the defense recovered two for touchdowns. But Carr didn't seem too concerned about the kicking game problems. "You can look at the blocked punts from a defensive standpoint," Carr said. "We are going to be aggressive in the kicking game this season. "As for Epstein, the last field goal he made was 57 yards, and that should give him some confidence," Carr said. The Wolverines now must concen- trate on this upcoming weekend's 105th running of the Penn Relay Carnival in Philadelphia. The Penn Relays, as the event is called, has long been one of the most highly attended track competitions in the world. Last year, the Wolverines clinched first in the distance medley relay with a time of 9:27.64. of victories With their schedule free until May 1, the Wolverines will be using their time to prepare for the Midwest Rowing Championships in Madison, where they will see teams such as Wisconsin, Ohio State, and Michigan State - all of whom they have already beaten this season. The Wolverines made a major splash at the championships last year, when they upset perennial champion Wisconsin. AI THE DAILY. YOUR SOURCE FOR SPORTS. Student Storc Approved by Uof M ( " E~i'.
