10 - The Michigan Daily - Wednesday, April 14, 1999 Scales' hit streak ends; Zahn reaches 100 wins 0 By Chris Orandstaff Daily Sports Writer In baseball, all streaks must end. It took 2,632 games before Cal Ripken hung it up, and 56 games before Joe DiMaggio finished a game without a hit - and yester- day, on a some- BASEBALL what smaller Notebook scale, Michigan's Bobby Scales ---------------~- went hitless - ending an 18-game hit streak. "I didn't have a very good approach at the plate today," Scales said. "I was frustrated and I just couldn't find my swing." Despite yesterday's off-day at the plate, Scales has been what a leadoff hitter should be this season. Scales started the season with a 12-game hit streak, which was part of a 16 game hit streak extending to the 1998 season, and has reached base safely in every game this sea- son. The presence of such a dominate leadoff hitter cannot be measured as it both jump starts the team and unsettles the oppositions pitching from the get go. Scales has now hit in 31 of the team's 35 games, and in those con- tests that he didn't get a hit he boasts a .636 on base percentage. Prior to yesterday's game Scales was leading the team in batting aver- age, hits, runs and walks. RAGING BULLPEN: Yesterday's game also marked the beginning of a new streak for two young Wolverines. Freshman Jeff Trzos recorded the first win of his young career, and sophomore Nick Alexander got his first save. The pitching of Trzos, Alexander, and junior Bryan Cranson keyed the Wolverines to victory. Starter Bobby Korecky had a rocky start and left the game after allowing eight runs on eight hits in an inning-and-a-third of action. But the Wolverine bullpen com- pletely shut down the Eastern Michigan attack by pitching a no-hit shutout the for the final seven-and- two-thirds innings. The win was especially sweet for Trzos, who after dominating oppo- nents during his high school career, has struggled to find playing time this season. Yesterday's four innings of action were the most he had seen all season. "It feels great to get the win," Trzos said. "Overall I don't feel like I've pitched that great this year, so it was nice to come out and pitch well today." CENTURY MARK: Michigan coach Geoff Zahn reached a personal mile- stone yesterday as the Wolverine skipper notched his 100th career vic- tory. Zahn is currently fifth all-time behind Ray Fisher, Bud Middaugh, Mobey Benedict, and Bill Freehan. In four seasons at the helm of the Wolverines Zahn has accumulated a 100-95-1 record, and was named Big Ten coach of the Year in 1997. PISTILLI HONORED: Sophomore Vince Pistilli earned Big Ten pitcher- of-the-Week honors after Saturday's 7-4 victory. Pistilli ended Big Ten leader Ohio State's 14 game winning streak by pitching well in seven innings of complete game action. 0 Summer Troupe Office of New Student Programs DANA LINNANE/Daily Michigan second baseman Bobby Scales saw his 18-game hit streak come to an end against Eastern Michigan yesterday. But the Wolverines triumphed, 10-8. r. - - _ Skr , 1'1t go #o EIrorte for (ke kistorgy... t/.e 1',i xty. For now, I'll snorkel 1200 miles of coral reef. Hike a Tasmanian trail. "We haven't been playing the way we can, and today we came out and played great defense and we need to keep going." With Michigan threatening to mercy, Penn State was able to pro- duce two runs on two hits to take the game to the bottom of the fifth with the score of 9-2. And with the bases loaded, fresh- man Stefanie Volpe ripped the ball passed the infield sending the team's 10th run home, ending the game and capturing the 10-2 win. "We put our bat on the ball and their pitcher wasn't fooling us, Hutchins said. "We jumped on top of them and put them out of their game."
