Winning three of the four games and extending its Big Ten record to 7- BASEBALL 1, Ohio State made Commentary it clear that every----------- one, including ----------------- Michigan, is going to have to get a little better if they want to contend for the Big Ten title. "They just had that little bit of extra oomph," senior Bobby Scales said. "They are definitely on a roll." The Buckeyes beat Michigan with their bats. In the first game of the series, catcher Tom Durant hit a grand slam in the top of the ninth inning to give Ohio State a 7-3 victo- ry. In their other two victories, the Buckeyes scored in I1 of the 16 innings played. Of those 11, eight were multi-run innings. When they had men on base, the Buckeyes' hit- ters produced, scoring 33 runs with just 39 hits in their three victories. In comparison, Michigan stranded 25 of its 44 baserunners in those three games. The Buckeyes also started quickly, scoring five runs in the first inning of the middle game on Saturday and 11 of their 13 runs in yesterday's game in the first four innings. The Wolverines, on the other hand, opened both of those losses with scoreless first innings and didn't scnre the meat nf their rnns until the middle or late stretch. Each game, Michigan had to try to dig itself out of a four-or five-run hole that was just too deep to overcome. For most of the weekend, Ohio State seemed to be just one step ahead of the Wolverines. Perhaps the best example of that came in the opening game on Saturday, in which both teams rallied to produce a num- ber of runs in one inning. In the first inning, the Buckeyes quickly put runners on first and sec- ond base with one out. Three base hits, two critical errors, and a wild pitch later, starter J.J. Putz was leav- ing the game with five runs on the scoreboard for Ohio State. In the fifth, Michigan scored three runs and loaded the bases with just one out, threatening a comeback. But Buckeyes second baseman Chad Ehrnsberger, made a diving stop on a rocket up the middle, flipping it to the shortstop for a double play to end the inning. The outcome of this weekend means that it will be difficult for the Wolverines to compete for the regu- lar season Big Ten title. With a 6-6 record in the Big Ten, Michigan can't afford many more conference loses. And with a four-game road series against a strong Minnesota team up next weekend, the Wolverines will have to get back to top form if they plan to win the series. "We have six losses this year, and when we won (the Big Ten regular season title) in 1997, we were 17-9," Scales said. "It doesn't take a math major to figure out that we've got to cnme hack and nlav hard." Yet Scales' hitting barrage that has allowed him to reach base in every game this season was of little conse- quence to the , senior as his Wolverines came up short three times against the Buckeyes this weekend. "I would trade every game of the streak for four wins this weekend," Scales said. And for Scales, Michigan's dreary showing on a dismal afternoon yes- terday was a bitter pill to swallow, but one that comes from the chal- lenge that he and his teammates have come to expect. "It's tough to keep your head up right now," Scales said. "But that's why we're here, that's why you come to Michigan. "We're here for the challenge, to play the Ohio States. I don't have to say how big it is to lose three to Ohio State. I don't have to explain what that rivalry means." Despite slipping in the Big Ten rankings with this weekend's losses to the Big Ten pacesetter, Scales was quick to point out that the losses were certainly not insurmountable. "We do have a lot going for us," Scales said. "In the grand scheme of things this could only be three losses. We have to look at it simply as three losses and get back to taking care of. business." That's a mission Michigan coach Geoff Zahn is confident his squad can achieve as they eye four more conference battles ahead. "I told the kids to keep their heads up;' Zahn said. "We need to keep battling. We are very capable of doing well and controlling our own destiny. If we can put a winning streak together here, we're very much in it." And for an experienced team that has found itself in tough places before, responding to adversity is something to be expected from this Michigan team, Scales said. But despite seeing an opportunity to make some serious strides in the conference race slip through their hands, Zahn said he is still confident in his team's ability to dispel any doubt about contending in the con- ference. "I thought our guys battled back hard," Zahn said. "I still don't think we've seen any team that we can't. play against. Any one of my guys out. here would love another shot at Ohio State later in the year." Should Michigan get back on pace to challenge the Buckeyes, who are now 7-1 in the conference, Scales said this weekend's matchups with the Buckeyes will need to serve A the catalyst for a mid-season turn- around. "This weekend has to be a motiva- tor for us," Scales said. "Its got to be. There's no question, our objective is to win the Big Ten." And that's a goal that has remained consistent all season long said Zahn who knows this weekend's setbacks won't knock his team out for long. "Our guys are not going to give up.* This is not a team that gives in, they battle back," Zahn said. "You won't see this team give up at all." This time the Buckeyes' backstop slugged a grand slam onto the softball field, and gave Ohio State a 7-3 lead. Ohio State rode Durant's ninth-inning heroics into Saturday's second game with five runs in the first. The Wolverines recovered, as they pulled within 8-5 in the fifth inning with the bases loaded and Parrish coming to the plate. Parrish sent a shot up the middle which looked as if it would get through, but Buckeye second baseman Chad Ehrnsberger ended the Wolverines' threat by making a div- ing catch and flip to his right, to start an inning-ending dou- ble play. In Saturday's night-cap, it was Ehrnsberger again who proved to be a thorn in the side of the Wolverines. The Buckeye second baseman connected on two Vince Pistilli offerings for round trippers, and racked up four RBI. But Pistilli (2-1) would have the last laugh as that output would be all the Buckeyes could muster. Pistilli finished the game having pitched a seven-hit complete game victory for the Wolverines. Ohio State finished their successful weekend with a 13- 10 barn burner against the Wolverines yesterday. "They beat us three out of four times, so they proved they were the better team this weekend," Zahn said. "The key _.. .. : :«. L ...«E r-- T:« . (Dr.:11;, :xiy ;A I -' ' .: m.
