0 12B -- The Michigan Daily - best of Ann Aror 1999 - Thursday, April 8, 1999 AZ Best of the University The Michigan Daily - Best of Ann ArLor 1999 Top 10 Albums (The nation s top-selling albums for the week) N Henderson House (Best Co-Op) This place must really be cool - we haven't been able to find a single per- son who actually lives there and it still iced this category hands-down. Maybe the people that live there haven't seen the light of day in weeks because they've been filling out hundreds of Best of Ann Arbor ballots to win this prestigious honor. Or, maybe we just didn't look hard enough. Psych 111 (Best Course, Best Blow- Off Course) Freud thought that every man sexually desires his mother. Others feel that undergraduates are great guinea pigs to use in their exper- iments. The folks in the Psych depart- ment agree with both calls and they'll teach you about this too. That is teach you and practically every other under- class student at the University. But if you sleep in and miss, say, a month of class, you won't need a shrink to tell you the lecture notes are available online and the exams are far from hard. The Michigan Football Team (Best University Sports Team) Even without superstar Charles Woodson, now pick- ing passes in Oakland, the football team is still the most popular University squad. We were all very fond of the Tom Brady to a wide-open Tai Streets combo whether the bomb for a TD took place on the gridiron of the newly-haloed Michigan Stadium, a domed carpet in Minneapolis or some tiny stadium in sunny Hawaii over Thanksgiving break. Yes, it's true the team couldn't get by Ohio State for the first time in three years, but they still brought us home a Citrus Bowl title - and for that we are all very grateful. Mary Markley Dinning Hall (Best Residence Hall Cafeteria) If you hap- pen to be stuck on the hill, be sure to stop by this wondrous cafe. It is so much better than anything on Central Campus - better than South, West, East and Barbour. And don't start thinking that Stockwell is good, because Markley is by far the best. When in the mood for something meaty and processed, or anything made of chicken, the pride of the Hill is the only place to turn. Michigan League (Best University Bathroom) This building's got a setup only Thomas Crapper could have designed better. With lots of room to move around and lots of commodes, the word "john" hardly does it justice. Pi Beta Phi (Best Sorority to Party With) It looks like it was a good year to be in a Greek house whose letters end in Phi, huh? Even though sorori- ties aren't allowed to throw their own bashes, Pi Phi is quite popular when it comes time for a two-way. Campus fraternities are always in search of a group of girls to invite over for a long night of dancing. Pi Phi can make any dark fraternity house excit- ing and fun. Once again, tight black pants rule Ann Arbor's Bacchaelaureate night life. Gloria Steinem (Best Speaker of the Past Year) Steinem's visit to the 1. Britney Spears, "... Baby One More Time" 2. Eminem, "The Slim Shady LP" 3. TLC, "Fan Mail" 4. Lauryn Hill, "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" 5. Shania Twain, "Come on Over" 6. The Offspring, "Americana" 7. Cher, "Believe" 8. Dixie Chicks, "Wide Open Spaces" 9. BLACKstreet, "Finally" 10. Ginuwine, "100% Ginuwine" Source: Billboard Magazine MARGARET MYERS/Daily Quarterback and baseball fire-bailer Drew Henson and the rest of the football team won the "Best University Sports Team" award for 1999. Michigan Theater last month was much more satisfying than the cramped, overcrowded room in the Union where she appeared last year. Her empowering lecture spoke to many University feminists, and her informal style (with the focus on an open mic/question and answer session) made the huge crowd seem more like a group of friends. South Quad (Best Residence Hall) The "man" tries to break up the 5,000- plus party that was life in South Quad by shipping out most of the football players and the residents still find a way to have a good time. First-year students and sophomores take heart: If you like what living in South Quad has done for your campus social life, things will only get much better as you move off campus for your final couple of years in Ann Arbor. Ralph Williams (Best Professor) We are thinking of changing the name of this award to the Ralph Williams award because he wins it every single year. You know, like the America's Cup - the U.S. almost always wins in sail- ing so our name is on the cup and someone has to come and beat us for it. Well, Prof. Williams - your class, skill and sense of humor as a lecturer has made you Ann Arbor's version of a great sailing combo that always wins our version of the America's Cup. From Great Books to the Bible you keep them all clamoring for more and you also manage to give all of their hands a good shake as well. www.michigandaily.comn (Best University Website) OK, two things. First the Daily's Website technically is not a University Website - we are inde- pendent from the official University sites. Second, we did not stuff the ballot boxes to win this category. Still, it's obvi- ous that somebody is reading us online. Maybe it was the inclusion of an easily- accessible crossword and the current temperature and weather in Ann Arbor that finally put us over the top. v V t It f+ , , , ' j, l 19 53 \ tt ' 1 f rn , 551 SOUTH DIVISION o 6 6 3-115 9 0 Do yourself a Don't forget, i's always the PEAK'Ko season. It's fun on smooth roads, but in any small two-seater like this it's a chore on uneven sur- faces. Big lips throw the rear end up a little, and fast cornering can get hairy if you hit even a small pot- hole. But on smooth roads, the rear- wheel drive layout is barrels of fun to toss around corners. And for immature drivers like myself, the Miata is lightweight enough to be forgiving if you get yourself in trou- ble on a power slide. Last week I subjected my room- mate to a few of my driving-side- ways antics. When I took the M-14 Miller Road entrance ramp a little hot, he tensed his neck muscles, grabbed the door panel with the strength of 10 men, and said a silent prayer of thanks that the Mazda engineers made the Miata handle so beautifully and naturally. The Miata is the sort of car that every enthusiast should own at least once in his or her life. Other good ones to make your list should be a Lotus Super Seven, a Volkswagen Corrado SLC, a Dodge Viper, any BMW M3, any Audi Quattro wagon, and a loud, obnoxious diesel truck. Or, whatever you think is best. A few years ago an independent research firm did a very complicat- ed study that showed that Miata had a better and more recognizable name than the Mazda company itself. I believe this will be the case for a long time. After all, it's the best Mazda you can buy, and some might say the Miata is the best rea- sonably-priced top-down driver out there. There's no time like the present to do some top-down driving. The Miata is great at wind deflection in the cabin area. And although I did the drive alone, I managed to hear myself quite well as I sung to the new Neutral Milk Hotel album at 90 mph. - Reilly Brennan is quickly losing his hair.
