Make lots c of new things, be safe and come i fall. When you get back, write for an every day. It's loads of fun and stir By Rick Freeman Daily Sports Editor Even though his team was closer to the Bust of Ann Arbor, Lou Bullock must have been voted Best Athlete because he stood out so much. The football team's season was forgettable, except for it's finish and the Michigan hockey team had an equally dull middle stretch. The exciting thing about the basketball team's year was how unpredictable they were. They man- aged to lose in horrifying, ugly ways (remem- ber Northwestern?) and then they beat a Final Four team at Crisler. Throughout almost all of it, Bullock was the one constant - he shot and shot and shot from long-distance, usually with uncanny accuracy. And when his teammates couldn't match his output, he never complained. He never made the kind of snide remarks you sometimes hear in press conferences when a marquee player doesn't feel he's get- ting enough support. He never said "It's got to be a total team effort," or "We need to play as a team." Instead, he praised the progress of his green and inexperienced teammates, even when that lack of experience had fans cursing those same players and calling them incompetent. Bullock seemed to have an infinite patience for reporters' questions. No matter how bad a thrashing he and his teammates had just endured, he responded in his quiet, even voice. Moments after his University career came to an end, his voice was even softer. He ambled through the bowels of the United Center. In subdued tones he made an effort to be optimistic about the degree he was set to earn and the great times he had in college. His heart might have been broken wide open, or he might really have just been gain- ing perspective. You never could tell with Lou. He was always the same even-keel guy, it seemed. It was almost boring. Which was the exact opposite of his game. When he sensed trouble, he went into a different mode. He dribbled a little faster, he slashed, he shot. He tried to play the entire game on his own. Sometimes he did, sometimes he didn't. But whenever he did it, he showed the competitive side that hid beneath his sleepy eyes. His trash talk - on the court, anyway - was nonexistent. He got just one technical foul in his career, in the late stages of an ugly home loss to Michigan State this season. When it came to his coach, though, things were a bit different. He and Brian Ellerbe each claimed to have the best shot on the team. Sometimes, for the benefit of reporters, they'd pretend to mock each other. Now, if he wants, Lou's got one more piece of evidence - he's got a mandate from the voters. 1800 Chem (Best Lecture Hall) Ifago- raphobia is not a problem for you, this is by far the best place for a morning lecture. It's big enough that if you arrive late (which you are bound to do) nobody will know, and if you doze off (which you are bound to do) nobody will see you. Fans of the periodic table and film students alike agree that when it comes to massive inside spaces, this is it. AIESEC (Best Student Group) Want to go abroad? AIESEC offers hundreds of internships and employment opportuni- ties to University students every year. About the only thing they can't help you with is the weather you will encounter when you get where you're going -- but watch out, they may get jurisdiction over global climate one of these years. Alpha Sigma Phi (Best Fraternity to Party With) Word on the street is these guys can really throw down. White base- ball caps are not required for admission, contrary to popular belief - but they can't hurt. Angell Hall (Best Building) From the breath-taking exterior architecture to the computing site dotted with the go-get-'em-world color of the new iMacs - this building is definitely head-and-shoulders above its other structural counterparts on campus. Angell Hall Computing Site (Best Computing Center) Again it's all about iMacs. Or maybe its the colorful station cards. If you want to talk about something besides color, how about the fact that those students wandering to and from the Angell auditoriums can excitedly watch wet, oozing, physical stress bubble out of the foreheads of those working in the glass-encased computing site below. We other students can watch this happen 24- hours a day - which makes the Angell site that much more appealing. CCRB (Best Hangout for Jocks, Best Place to Work Out) At any given moment, you can witness students of all shapes and sizes participating in all sorts of activities. From basketball to swimming, judo to yoga, there's always something to do. Harlan Hatcher Graduate Library (Best Library, Best Place to Study) If sex in the stacks does not do it for you (transfer) then the millions of volumes in this building should. Anything you want, they have. You want a book on medicine of the Middle East written in Arabic? You need go no further than our, great friend on the Diag.
