LOCAL/STATE The Michigan Daily - Thursday, April 8, 1999 - 7A S BALKANS Continued from Page 1A angered Americans and boosted sup- port for U.S. participation in the mili- tary campaign, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll. Predictions by Clinton administration officials that Milosevic's campaign st civilians would turn into politi- c' support for commitment in the Balkans appeared to be fulfilled; the poll showed that two in three Americans believe the United States has a "moral obligation to establish peace in Kosovo." An unmanned U.S. Army recon- naissance plane was shot down over Yugoslavia, but otherwise U.S. and NATO officials reported another day of, good weather permitted the alliance to increase the pace of its air attacks against Yugoslav troops and security police. U.S. A-10 tank- killer planes and combat jets from the carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt were active in attacking Yugoslav units in Kosovo, Pentagon officials said. As usual, NATO briefers gave few details about what targets have been hit. British Air Commodore David Wilby, speaking for the alliance, said the bombing has "degraded the integrated air defense system, attacked command-and-control cen- ters communications nodes, logistic supplies such as ammunition and petroleum, military repair facilities and carefully selected bridges, which will directly affect the resup- ply of (Yugoslav) forces." POLISH Continued from Page IA After negotiations ended on April 5, 1989, the road was paved for free elections in which Poles replaced Communist party members with leaders of the Solidarity movement, which had led a decade long struggle democ- racy. The fall of communism in Poland was followed by the destruction of the Berlin Wall later that year and the collapse of communist governments in East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and finally in the Soviet Union itself. History Prof. Brian Porter, one of the event's organizers, said one of the goals of the conference is to examine how the successful method of the 1989 negotiations could apply to political turmoil today, such as the conflict in Kosovo. "The Round Table speaks to all of us - it gives us a model of peaceful revolution," Porter said. Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich.) was scheduled to make opening remarks at last night's event, but could not attend because he is accompanying Secretary of Defense William Cohen on a visit to NATO forces in the Balkans. In his address, Michnik stressed the importance of compromise. "To be able to live in peace and freedom, it is necessary to replace the language of war with the language of peace" he said. The conference drew academics from around the world, but was also of interest for University students. "I've been reading about Michnik all term," said LSA sophomore Justin Fitzpatrick, who is currently taking a anthropology course about Poland's transition to democracy. "Now I was just standing behind him in line - that's pret- ty cool." PRAYERS Continued from Page IA the Balkans and for Serbian perpetrators "whose hearts have been hardened." Camino said the prayer is worded with feelings of hope Hoxha is a native of Fier, Albania, which is housing more than 1,000 refugees fleeing Serbian attacks. Trix studied Albanian in the Kosovo capital at the University of Prishtina in the late 1980s. She begin to give talks in the United States on Kosovo politics in 1989. "You talk until you're blue in the face," Trix said. "You never know how much interest will continue," referring to the sound-bite like memory many people maintain con- cerning international politics. The committee is not political or religious. Camino said they are "working for humanitarian ends. "My hope is that common sense and goodness will tri- umph in the end," Camino said.
