The Michigan Daily - Wednesday, March 24, 1999 - 7 4 :Nr MacDonald returs, to television --- i Roots dig to heart o By Jie Un For the Daily jIf you are still shedding tears over dorm MacDonald's departure from "Saturday Night Live," you can put that box of Kleenex away. After trying his hand as the news commentator on "Live" with The Norm Show ABC Tonight at 9:30 no luck, Norm returns to televi- sion on a new net- work with a differ- ent date and time. They say practice makes perfect and in this case it seems to be true. In "The Norm S h o w ," MacDonald plays Norm Henderson, a former profes- sional hockey (Laurie Metcalf), better known as Roseanne's neurotic sister Jackie on "Roseanne." Originally Norm's social worker, now she is his co-worker. Other stars in the show include Danny (Ian Gomez), another social worker and Mr. Curtis (Bruce Jarchow), the office boss who is just waiting for the day to come when Norm leaves his office. "The Norm Show" allows MacDonald to showcase his comedic abilities, which was something he was unable to do on "Live." In the premiere episode, Norm is on a mission to stop one of his clients, Taylor (Nikki Cox), from working at a "massage" parlor. With Laurie's help, he must persuade Taylor to quit her job at the parlor. The best lines and the funniest moments from the show come in the exchanges between MacDonald and Metcalf. The two have great chemistry on scene and the verbal repartee continues without missing a beat. At the "massage" parlor, when Taylor tries to explain to Norm why she chose her job, Norm says, "Must have been some career day at your school." Laurie responds right back with, By Monica L. Beckham For the Daily In a generation full of commer- cialized hip-hop music that glam- orizes lifestyles centered on "money, cash and ho's," traits like musical originality, creativity and talent end up taking a back seat to trendiness and popularity. Thankfully, just when the industry and the genre seems overwhelmed with sampled beats and meaning- Courtesy of APA Nonn MacDonald's badk, on ABC, that Is. "There's nothing sadder than a 70 year old prostitute, other than her customers." The other characters 4)n the show, how- ever, are substandard. Danny is the side- kick, the friend who is always there no matter what. Mr. Curtis is the nasty boss whom everyone talks about behind his back. He hates Norm and uses every opportunity to insult him, while Norm just sits there and takes'it. These two are just there to fill the empty desks in the office. "The Norm Show" vwarks as a show- case for MacDonald andi Metcalf to shine and prove their comedic abilities. So tonight while the WB airs reruns, tune into the "The Norm Show." It's a show worth checking out, wheier you're a die- hard "Saturday Night Live" fan or just looking for a good laugh: State Theater, Detroit March 21, 1999 tour, entitled "A less lyrics, the latest record from The Roots, "Things Fall Apart," is released. Bringing the record to the people meant even better news for hip- hop fans. A few months follow- ing its release, the band began a nation-wide Common Evening to the concert. The show was orig- inally scheduled for 7:30 p.m., but as the clock passed 8:45 p.m., the crowd remained surprisingly calm, despite the fashionably late appear- ance of The Roots. The waiting was worthwhile when the band took the stage. Along with its music, the band's appeal was its ability to establish a rapport with the crowd. On a bare stage stood the band's five mem- bers: the drummer ?uest Love, bassist Leonard Hubbard, key- boardist Kamal, MC Black Thought, and Scratch, the human turntables. For those unfamiliar with the Roots, all instrumentation is performed solely by band mem- bers with no artificial sound. Shortly after the opening of the show, the tour's title, "A Common Evening with The Roots," came into focus. The hip-hop artist Common (formerly Common Sense), joined the performance, hence clarification of the title. With Common's assistance, the band's set pleased both old and new-school fans by including tracks from every Roots record to- date. But some disappointment was aroused when the hit single, Chip-ho p "You Got Me," with Ervkh ad from the record "Things Fall Apart" was performed by someone other than the featured artist. Additionally, those familiar wish Roots' concerts may have been dis- mayed at the lack of the band's trademark- "Hip-Hop 101" routine, in which they perform live covers of classic hip-hop numbers. - Despite these minor setbacks, the concert had no chance to run out of energy. The highlights of the high- intensity evening were solo perfor- mances by ?uest Love, Kamal, Leonard and Scratch. Kamal dii- played his keyboard technique by playing segments of songs ranging from Bach to DMX and Beethoven, and Master P. Leonard performed a rendition of Old MacDonald, heavy metal style. As the evening drew to a close, The Roots, without a doubt, proved themselves worthy of the fan's admiration. In the midst of the pol- luted galaxy of talentless R&B artists who have nothing more to say than "Can I Get a What What?," The Roots shines far above the rest as a talented group capable of find- ing the root of all goodness in the world of hip-hop. player who is more famous for his gambling and tax evasion ,practices rather than his hockey talents. w ring his probation period, he must per- orm community service as a social work- er.
